Shakopee School Board Business Meeting

October 12, 2015
The Shakopee School Board held a business meeting on Monday, Oct. 12. Board Member Scott Swanson started the meeting by welcoming back Board Member Mary Romansky, who returned after suffering a stroke in June.

Softball Complex Named After Longtime Coach Neil Johnson

Thompson and JohnsonSuperintendent Dr. Rod Thompson presented a resolution to the Board to name the softball fields adjacent to Vaughan Field and West Junior High as the Neil Johnson Softball Complex. Johnson became the first, and only, Head Girl's Softball Coach at Shakopee High School in 1976 and was instrumental in the creation of the softball complex.

Johnson was recently inducted into the Minnesota High School Coaches Hall of Fame and is also a member of the Minnesota Softball Coaches Hall of Fame. He has led his Shakopee teams to 10 conference titles and three state tournament appearances.

"Mr. Johnson is a passionate, enthusiastic, and visionary educator and coach. He has dedicated his life to the enrichment of student-athletes and encouraged them to strive for excellence in the classroom and on the sports field," Thompson said while reading the resolution. "He is a mentor and friend to his colleagues and has provided continuous encouragement and support as he helped them develop coaching and leadership skills."

Swanson and RiceRecognition of Student Academic Achievement

A number of high school students were recognized at Monday's meeting for academic achievement. Five students, including Ben Allard, Phoebe Hessen, Josh Klemm, Jayden Luikens, and Jacob Russett were recognized for being National Merit Scholar Commended Students. Madeline Rice was also recognized at the meeting for being named a National Merit Scholar Semifinalist.

Teaching and Learning Report

Director of Teaching and Learning Nancy Thul presented the Board with a proposed timeline for the course proposal process for the 2016-17 school year. Thul explained that course proposals are due before Thanksgiving and will be presented to the Board in December so they can be approved at the January Business Meeting.

Enrollment Update

Superintendent Rod Thompson presented the Board with a District enrollment update. As of October 1, the District's total enrollment number (K-12) of 7,969 is within 12 students of the projected number of 7,981.

"When you consider the number of families who are moving in and out of Shakopee, our team really did an amazing job of being spot-on with our enrollment projection," Dr. Thompson said. "What I really appreciate is over time we have consistently and regularly been spot-on."

Board Approves SW Metro Joint Powers Agreement

The Board unanimously approved the Southwest Metro Intermediate District Joint Powers Agreement. If approved by all ten member school districts in Carver and Scott counties, the Southwest Metro Intermediate District would serve to replace the functions of the Southwest Metro Educational Cooperative. Intermediate districts, such as the proposed Southwest Metro Intermediate District, offer integrated services for secondary, postsecondary, and adult students in the areas of vocational education, special education, and other authorized services.
