The 5 athletes who travelled to Samoa have done us all proud. Not only have they succeeded in their chosen sport but they have all represented NZ and Olympic Weightlifting NZ with pride and passion.

2016 Oceania Championships Qualifying Dates and Totals

The 2016 Oceania Championships are a key event on the 2016 International Calendar as they double as the Regional Qualifying event for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
As such the performance in team event for the Senior Men and Senior Women will determine if we are able to gain a nomination place for one male and one female.
Actual selection to the NZ Olympic Team is done by the NZ Olympic Committee.

In order to allow as much time as possible to prepare for the event the qualifying period and totals are being announced now. This will also allow the competition calendar to be set around the qualifying dates.

Qualifying Dates:
Start on the 1st September 2015 and end on the 1st March 2016

Qualifying Totals:
Senior: A Grade (Oceania ranking rather than NZ ranking will be a selection factor given the priority on team performance for Rio qualification)
Junior: C Grade
Youth: E Grade

To see grading totals required please see our International Qualification Standards page on our website. Click here to visit this page.

More information is to follow around funding and a training camp. We expect the Senior team and Support Staff to receive a significant level of funding to attend the event and a pre-event training camp.
While there will be a heavy focus on the Seniors we expect to send full Junior and Youth teams and are aiming to win team titles in these age categories.

Given the timing of the event it is essential that athletes aiming to make the team plan around these dates especially the end date. If you are going to have a break over Christmas & New Years make sure it is a short one.

Anti-Doping Rule Violation 2.10
Prohibited Association

After a recent international situation, OWNZ would like to remind all of our members about the Drug Free Sport NZ Anti-Doping Rule Violation 2.10 - Prohibited Association.

Any OWNZ member must not work with coaches, trainers, or any other athlete support personnel who are ineligible on account of an Anti-Doping Rule violation or have been convicted of doping. Some examples of types of association are training, strategy, technique, nutrition/medical advice, therapy, treatment or prescriptions or allowing the ineligible person to serve as a representative.

The other association relevant to our membership is that an OWNZ member cannot compete in any competition in which an ineligible athlete or personnel is competing or associated. For example, in a non-sanctioned weightlifting meet or "fitness" competition.

For specific details on this violation please see this link here.

See you on the platform!
