Park news

The changes at Yellowstone National Park are fascinating. During her visit in June, our author Janet Chapple found that the area around Grassy Spring, near the appealing Canary Spring, seemed very hot, with little terraces appearing since she was last there and a tiny new spring above the first major parking area. Subsequently, Upper Terrace Drive was closed for several days in July as staff built a barrier around the activity. Janet also reported on road construction near Gardiner around the North Entrance Arch, which will continue right up to the centennial of the National Park Service on August 25, 2016. The park is open 365 days a year, but visitor services close for part of the year. If you are fortunate enough to travel there, remember to check current conditions and park alerts on the NPS website.

Announcing Through Early Yellowstone

Readers of Yellowstone Treasures and other park visitors will enjoy the stories in our new book, Through Early Yellowstone: Adventuring by Bicycle, Covered Wagon, Foot, Horseback, and Skis, to be released in June 2016 to coincide with the National Park Service's 100th birthday. Experience the geysers without boardwalks, hike the trails before maps, encounter the bears, and breathe in the fresh mountain air. The crown jewel of the book is the set of 30 watercolor paintings by Thomas H. Thomas, shown here for the first time outside Wales.  To quote Philetus W. Norris’s poem from 1884, also in this book, “There, enraptured, have I wandered. . . .” This spring we will provide our newsletter readers the chance to preorder the book.

Janet posts her news and views about the park, her favorite hot springs and geysers, and her Yellowstone projects on her blog. Here are some representative posts: We think you'll especially like the video of Riverside Geyser in the third blog post.
