JUNE 26, 2016
Westwood Lake Triathlon

Half Iron, Olympic and Sprint

The Westwood Lake Triathlon will offer athletes the choice of three distances; a Sprint course, Olympic course and Half Iron distance.

Westwood Lake is an ideal setting for a triathlon event, having been the venue for triathlon for the BC Summer Games in 2014, as well as being the lake that many of the city’s triathletes use for their open water swims.  The bike course for the Olympic and Half Iron will be a challenging one, with some good climbs and quick descents, with the majority of the run course taking place around the scenic Westwood Lake Trail.

The addition of the Westwood Lake Triathlon to the 2016 race calendar will give athletes hungry for more race options an alternative north of the Cowichan Valley for an open water triathlon that is locally owned and produced and keeps the island feel, while still delivering the full experience that our athletes are used to receiving.

We feel the date and course is a perfect test for those planning to race IMC in Whistler at the end of July.

2016 Series Pass
We will be celebrating ten years of racing at Cultus Lake next September.  For the first time there, we will be hosting a Half Iron distance race in addition to both Sprint and Olympic distance races.

HALF IRON SWIM - 2 km

The swim will be a two loop course with a water start.

HALF IRON BIKE COURSE - 90 km

The bike course will see athletes ride out 10 km towards Yarrow and then completing two 35 km loops before returning to Cultus Lake.   This will be a flat course through rural farm country.  We plan on having the course map on our website this week.

HALF IRON RUN - 21 km

We are finalizing a two loop run course.

Come join us for and finish up your season at Cultus Lake.

RACE DIRECTOR CORNER

Well, as another season ends we're getting settled here in Victoria.  We moved just before Cultus Lake and it has been a a little busy getting unpacked and settled the past month.  We're working on 2016 race planning as we get out the last items from 2015 races to athletes.

We will be taking some time off and be out of the office next month while we're competing at Ironman Arizona.  It will be Angie's first Ironman race and my return to Ironman racing from my last race in Kona in 2006.  Excited and nervous to be back doing the distance.  Looking forward to doing some local short course races next year.

In case you missed it, it was another hot and challenging race day in Kona at the World Championships last weekend.  Congratulations to Pro's Brent McMahon of Victoria for his 9th place finish and Jeff Symonds for a gutsy race.  Both were racing in Kona for the first time ever and Jeff finished the last 30 km of the bike course with one crank.

A tough day for Canadian Pro’s Heather Wurtele, shifter issues, and Angela Naeth who also raced but did not finish.

Some of the BC athletes we would like to congratulate include James Young (13:03:28), Claire Young (12:48:27), Steph Corker (10:44:45), Cailla Patterson (11:10:21), Martin Caron (10:21:20) and Victoria's Val Gonzales (14:53:11).

The NBC IRONMAN World Championship special will air on Saturday, Nov. 14, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. ET, with a recap of the pro race and also coverage of inspiring age-groupers.

All the best to couple of our Kelowna athletes as the Kelowna Apple will now be produced by Graham Hood, Malindi Elmore and James Young moving forward.

The offices of Triathlon Canada have moved to Victoria from Toronto and will be open for business here November 1st.

Congratulations to Michelle Valancius for recently being named as the TRIBC Official of the Year.  Congratulations also goes out to Tenille Hoogland who was recently hired as the new National and International Sport Development Manager for Triathlon Canada.
