             NEWSLETTER & SCHEDULE
October 19th, 2015
Dear Friends:

Sometimes to really get the feel of a person's worth you need to step into their shoes and try them on for size.  My partner-in-crime at Smalls, the legendary Mitch Borden, went on a trip to Japan with his wife (she is Japanese and they are visiting her family).  This left me with two weeks to do his job as well as mine.  Mitch, besides being the sprightly, philosophical animus who's love powers our club, is also the master of the logistics behind the club maintenance.  This means taking care of everything that goes into running a bar on a daily basis.  For me, this meant getting my butt out of bed early to supervise cleaning but also dealing with broken ice machines, clogged beer taps, busted amplifiers, a backed-up sewer, not to mention coordinating deliveries and getting the club up and running each day for our wonderful patrons.  A full day, indeed.  Honestly, I'm glad to have the opportunity to do all of this because it lets me see all of the aspects of the club inside and out.  I do want to give a shout out to my staff (thank you Robert Kendall!) who are just fantastic - I couldn't be luckier to have all of them.  Anyway, some photos of Mitch have surfaced on Facebook and he sure looks happy in Japan but, man, we're ready for him to come home already!

Feedback on the new website has been very positive from both musicians and our fans.  If you haven't checked it out yet, please do.  Remember, that old passwords from the old site are no longer valid.  You'll need to choose a membership tier that works for you and re-register.  But people are excited about the depth of our video/audio archive.  We've also been getting some inquiries from conservatories about being institutional subscribers for their students - something that is very dear to my heart, which is making this website a real tool for jazz education.

Lots of great music at both clubs this week - please take a look at our schedules and come on down.  We'd love to see you here.

Regards,

Spike
