Scottish Episcopal Church hosts Porvoo Primates and Presiding Bishops meeting

Porvoo_Primates

The Scottish Episcopal Church hosted the bi-annual meeting of the Porvoo Primates and Presiding Bishops in Edinburgh on 21 and 22 October.

The theme of the two day meeting, at which the Archbishop of Canterbury was present, was Prayer, Spirituality and Pilgrimage and the Primates and Presiding Bishops discussed issues of national identity, the refugee crisis, church and current geo-political challenges.

In welcoming the Primates and Presiding Bishops to Scotland, the Most Rev David Chillingworth, Bishop of St Andrews, Dunkeld & Dunblane and Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church said ‘The Scottish Episcopal Church was honoured to host the meeting of the Primates of the Churches of the Porvoo Communion. We have been enthusiastic members of the Porvoo Communion from the beginning of its life and we enjoyed strengthening relationships during our meeting last week.’

The Porvoo Communion is a communion of churches that have signed an agreement to “share a common life in mission and service”. These churches are either Anglican or Lutheran. The Porvoo churches agree on certain fundamental issues, but Porvoo is not a new confession. The churches maintain their respective identities.

Mr John Jutaro Tsukada was ordained Deacon under Letters Dimissori by the Rt Rev Dr Robert Gillies, Bishop of Aberdeen and Orkney and the Rt Rev Andrew Oohata, Bishop of Tokyo, at St Ninian’s Church, Aberdeen on 19 October 2015.  John is from the Diocese of Tokyo, and is on three years’ study leave for his PhD studies.

Bishop Bob presided at the Ordination service in a packed St Ninian’s Church. All three lessons were read in Japanese with the text in English on the service sheet. The sermon was given in Japanese by Fr Francisco Takahashi, Chair of the Standing Committee of the Diocese of Tokyo, with concurrent translation into English.

Bishop Oohata pronounced the absolution, the words of institution and the giving of the bible, the robing and the anointing as well as the final blessing all in Japanese.

Bishop Bob commented afterwards, “To ordain John Jutaro Tsukada a Deacon in this way was truly memorable and indeed betokens the wonderful good will that permeates across the worldwide Anglican Communion. The growing and lively congregation of St Ninian’s really rose to the occasion.” Bishop Bob added, “The standing ovation that John received after he was ordained says how much he and his family have become loved in that congregation over the last two years.”

John is to be Honorary Assistant Curate at St Ninian’s Church, Aberdeen.

Royal Hospital for Children – Service of Remembrance

St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral, Glasgow
Sunday, December 6 2015 at 2.30pm

Bereaved families and those affected by the loss of a child have been invited to attend a Service of Remembrance at St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral, Glasgow on Sunday 6 December at 2.30pm.

This annual service organised by staff from the Royal Hospital for Children (formerly Yorkhill) provides an opportunity to remember and give thanks for the young family members they have lost.

The service will be lead by the RHC Chaplain, Rev Jim Meighan and Rev Deacon James Kernaghan from St Peters and St Simon’s Church.  The music will be provided by Martin Kelly & Newton Mearns Baptist Church Music group.

Jim Meighan said:  “These services cannot be provided without the help and support of a small army of staff, volunteers and supporters. So on behalf of the families I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in the planning and organisation.  This multi-denominational event provides families with an opportunity to meet with other people who understand the length, breadth and depth of what it means to lose a precious young member of the family. The end of the service is the most remarkable part of the afternoon with families, mums and dads coming together to laugh, cry, and comfort each other. Knowing you are not alone on this journey makes a huge difference and in truth I need to thank the families and friends who over the years, by simply being present, have contributed far more to these services than the rest of us ever could.”

For further information contact the Royal Hospital for Children Chaplaincy Department on 0141 452 4017.
