Conference discusses the vital roles of African Veterinary Para-professionals

In October, GALVmed, in partnership with OIE and the Africa Veterinary Technicians Association held the first African veterinary para-professional conference in Pretoria, South Africa. The conference was attended by nearly a hundred participants including representatives of national associations of veterinary para-professionals, Veterinary Statutory Bodies from selected African countries and international organisations. GALVmed CEO Peter Jefferies emphasised that there are not enough veterinarians in Africa to meet the needs of small-holder livestock keepers. Therefore, there is a need to be pragmatic ad recognise that there's a place for paravets who should be given recognition of professional status that their training allows. Useful models already exist in certain countries.
