Alumni Awards and Homecoming Kickoff

Southern Wesleyan University’s 2015 Homecoming festivities will begin with an unforgettable evening, featuring the Rick Webb Family (left) and SWU’s own University Singers (right), Oct. 30 in the auditorium of Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center. The doors open at 6 p.m. and the concert begins at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for the concert are $10 per person. Tickets for the VIP Dinner (5:30 p.m. seating 5 p.m.) and concert are $25 per person. Alumni Awards

Also that evening, we will honor the lives and accomplishments of our outstanding alumni – Damon Qualls, Dr. Vicki Dill Luther, Dr. Ashley Joiner George, Dr. Keith Connor, and we will present a posthumous award honoring DePayne Middleton-Doctor to members of her family.

SWU Greenville moving!

SWU will soon move just a few miles down the road to its new location! The first classes will meet at the new learning center starting Nov. 2 in the Anderson Building at Park East office park, located just off Roper Mountain Rd., at 150 Executive Center Drive, just off Independence Blvd., not far from the I-85/I-385 interchange.

SWU reaching out to students impacted by flooding
Early October’s record flooding across South Carolina impacted many SWU students and their families in the Midlands and Lowcountry. Staff at Southern Wesleyan’s Columbia and Charleston learning centers are currently assessing the impact of flooding while identifying areas of greatest need among students enrolled in its adult evening program, as well as their families. For details on ways to help, go online to www.swu.edu/floodsupport. This web page outlines ways to give, including a way to give online. It also outlines volunteer opportunities with relief organizations providing assistance to flood victims. 

Jazz Ambassadors to present Big Band, Swing and more

The internationally acclaimed Jazz Ambassadors of Washington, D.C. will continue its long tradition of presenting free public performances when they appear Nov. 14, 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center on the campus of Southern Wesleyan University in Central. Tennis Complex Dedication

Join the SWU community and invited elected officials Oct. 28, 11 a.m. as we dedicate the Rev. Leroy Cox Tennis Complex, located adjacent to the university's welcome center in Central. Construction on this six-court, USTA-designed facility is currently underway.

SWU Golf Day

The SWU Men’s and Women’s Golf Teams and Coach Joey Maxon would like to invite all Junior Golfers age 17 and under to a free golf clinic Oct. 24, 10 a.m. – Noon at the driving range of P.B. Wood Golf Practice Facility
Range balls, a complimentary sleeve of TaylorMade golf balls and lunch will be provided to participants. Clubs will also be available to borrow if needed. A new state-of-the art digital scoreboard goes up at the soccer field located in the Joe R. Gilbert Track and Field Complex. President Todd Voss credits a combination of gifting and heavy discounting for covering the cost of the scoreboard by a company eager to get its name in the athletic scoreboard business. 
The board is 20 feet wide by 10 feet tall, and elevated at the southwest side of the track.

Congratulations!

Steven L. Evans (’06) has joined the staff of the Laurens County Chamber of Commerce as marketing specialist. He earned his MSM from SWU’s AGS program.
Krystin Nicole Orcutt (’09) married Trenton Griffith Drafts Sept. 6 in Charleston. Krystin earned her M.Ed. at Southern Wesleyan University’s Charleston learning center. She is also a National Board certified teacher at Hanahan Elementary School, part of the Berkeley County School District.
Rev. Terry (’76) and Amy Penland celebrated the birth of a grandson, Vincent Walter Trapp, born to Lee and Hannah (Penland) Trapp Oct. 15, at 9 lbs. 7 oz. and 21 ½ in. Terry is pastor of Canton Wesleyan Church, Canton, N.C.
Lindsey Torgerson (’07), left, is pictured with two Team USA teammates at the ITU World Championship Duathlon in Adelaide, Australia, which just concluded. Torgerson finished fifth in the world. She is a member of the 2007 NCCAA Championship Women’s Basketball Team at SWU.

In Memoriam

Gordon Elwood Miller passed away Oct. 13 in Kernersville, N.C. He received an honorary doctorate degree at Southern Wesleyan University. Miller served as president of Southern Pilgrim College, music director of Christ Wesleyan Church in Greensboro, N.C. and served on the Board of Aldermen for the town of Kernersville. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Southern Wesleyan University, Attn: Gordon Miller Scholarship Fund, PO Box 1020, Central, SC 29630. Emily McDonald (Trostel) Rohletter (’07), a music education graduate, died unexpectedly Oct. 8. Rohletter was a 2007 graduate in Music Education. Surviving are husband John Michael Rohletter and three children.
