Topic:  Be it resolved that...Evidence-based medicine is an affront to clinical acumen

Debaters:
Yea -
Thomas Krahn, Meds 2017 and Dr. John Rudan
Nay - Jennifer Fu, Meds 2018 and Dr. Stephen Archer
Location: Etherington Auditorium

Date and time: November 19 at 5pm

Dr. Travill came to Canada in 1957 after serving as aircrew in the RAF (WWII) and reading Medicine at the London Hospital Medical School. He did a residency year in Montreal and practised in Orillia with Dr. Philip Rynard (Queen's '26) before coming to Queen's to study Anatomy under Dr. John Basmajian. After two years at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, Dr. Travill returned to Queen's in the Department of Anatomy in 1964, becoming Professor and Head from 1969-1978. His research interests were in embryology, teratology and education. Dr. Travill was a strict parliamentarian and noted Faculty Historian (Medicine at Queen's; 1854-1920, the Hannah Institute for the History of Medicine, 1988: Just a Few: Queen's Medical Profiles , 1991). He served the community as a Trustee of the Separate School Board and in 1964 was a founding member of the John Austin Society, the still thriving local history of medicine club. In particular, Dr. Travill had a passion for debate on current social, political and educational issues, and for many years he delivered a rigorous and challenging lecture to incoming first year medical students during orientation week.

Awards

Sandra Banner Student Award for Leadership

CaRMS is now accepting applications for the 2016 Sandra Banner Student Award for Leadership (SBSAL).  The award is accompanied by funding to support each learner’s proposed leadership activities and will again be presented at the annual CaRMS Forum during the Canadian Conference on Medical Education. Students and residents enrolled full-time in a Canadian medical education program and residing in Canada can learn more about eligibility criteria and apply for the award through our new online application process by visiting www.carms.ca/sbsal.

Postgraduate Awards

Each year, the Postgraduate Medical Education Office encourages residents to submit applications for a variety of awards, bursaries, and fellowships.  There are two fellowships with upcoming application deadlines:  the Henry Albert Beatty Fellowship and the Cecil Reid Patience Fellowship.  These are both one-year salary awards for residents applying to the Clinician Investigator Program (CIP) in order to obtain a graduate degree while enrolled in a residency program at Queen's.  Application for the Fellowships is a two-stage process.  First, a letter to the Director of the CIP must be received at the time of the actual CIP application to the PGME Office requesting consideration for the specific Fellowship.  Second, evidence of acceptance into a graduate degree program from the School of Graduate Studies must be provided to the Director of the CIP once it is received.

The deadline for both Fellowships is November 30, 2015.

Residents are also reminded that there are a variety of bursaries and awards with January 2015 deadlines.  For a complete listing, including descriptions and deadline dates, please refer to the Postgraduate Awards section of the PGME website.

For more information, please contact the Postgraduate Awards Administrator, Barb Heffernan.
