Lawton News

Direct Drive Ends This Friday

We have five days to fully fund enrichment programs for this school year. So far, 55% of families have participated for this year’s Direct Drive, and we are grateful for their participation and
support, but we are only 59% to our goal of $145,000

What happens if we don’t reach 100% of our goal?

Depending on the size of the budget gap, the board can freeze funds, reduce funds, or cancel planned enrichment programs. The programs that would likely be impacted are Field Day, World Cultures, 5th Grade Promotion, and spring art and outdoor enrichment activities. Let’s keep pushing. If you haven’t turned in your pledge card yet, please do so, or make a gift online , before Friday! If you’ve already given, and want to pledge again, you can do that too.

Grandparents love Lawton too.  Did you know that many of the volunteers you see at school are grandparents to Lawton students? Grandparents play an important part in many families and they are an important part of the Lawton community too. Each year about 5% of the pledges supporting Lawton enrichment programs come from grandparents. This year is no different. We’ve already received several donations, and stories, from Lawton grandparents.

If your family has a grandparent that would like to support your child’s school experience at Lawton with a donation to the Direct Drive, the PTA has drafted this letter to help you get started. To print a copy of the pledge card, click here . You can also share with them this short video about the Lawton enrichments programs. The PTA will thank grandparent(s) after any donation and acknowledge their participation with a handwritten thank you note. Here are a few comments from Lawton grandparents…

“I love that the kids get so much time with art. I cannot paint, but I am glad there are so many volunteers at school willing to help my grandchild with art.” Grandma to Lawton 2nd grader

“I was watching to CNN a few weeks ago, when my grandson came into the room. He said, “Oh we have Student CNN News at school… we just heard about carbon taxes. Do you think carbon taxes are a good idea, Papa?” …Wow, I was so impressed! Thank you Lawton teachers and PTA for all that you do enrich these young minds.” Papa to Lawton 5th grader

“Recently, my grandson was telling me all about the different countries he’s learned about in school. He talked about each country with such interest and respect for their culture. I love to travel and I’ve been to Egypt, so we pulled out my old travel pictures and he told me all about how the Egyptians built the Sphinx that I was standing in front of all those years ago.” Nana to Lawton 5th grader

Lawton School Directory 2015-2016
Now that the school year is underway, the Directory Committee would like to invite you to submit your information online for this year's directory.  Inclusion in the directory is voluntary and requests email and phone for contact information.  The form will be available until Nov 9th, at which time the directory will be created from entries received.  In order to better align with the school's green initiatives, the directory will be a formatted pdf file delivered electronically through room parent email. Families can then download to their home computers, save the pdf into mobile apps such as iBooks or GoodReader, or print at home.  There will be limited number of printed copies available in the main office for those families without printer access. Please contact Stephanie Skinner with questions. Click here to get started adding your information!

Fall Festival and the Dance Dude
The Dance Dude is back thanks to the Lawton PTA! Starting next week, all our students will get a full week with the Dance Dude. All classes will come to the gym daily for PE/Music to learn new dances and review old ones. This is a fun week for parents to join in the fun! The week will culminate with the Fall Festival which will be on Friday, October 30 from 6:30 - 8:00. If you haven't experienced the Dance Dude yet, ask around and I'm sure you'll hear how it's not to be missed! Don't forget to ask your children to show you their dance moves!
12th Annual Halloween Candy Challenge
Our 12th Annual Halloween Candy Challenge is coming up very soon. This a a tradition at Lawton and has been very successful. Our students brought in close to 700 pounds of candy last year and all of it was donated to  one of our military bases that organizes packages to soldiers and families during the holidays. Candy must be turned in November 2 - 6, 2015. Attached is a flyer with more information.
Opportunities to Volunteer and A Chance for A New Career
The Lawton Staff welcomes parents to volunteer and help with lunch and recess, just sign-in in the office and wear a badge to join in on the fun.  Would you like to make helping with lunch and recess a new career choice?  Stop by and speak with the office staff and Mr. Manza to express your interest.

Ballard Food Bank Provides Needed Weekend Meals to Lawton Students

To All Lawton Families:
The Ballard Food Bank/Lawton Back Pack Program is dedicated to providing needed weekend meals for students at Lawton. Each Friday, students served by the program are sent home with paper grocery bags full of kid-friendly, easy-to-prepare meals for the weekend. If you would like your child to participate, please return the blue, double-sided form sent home last week to our counselor, Constance Hutchinson, or Laura Thomas in the main office, or click on this link to print and complete the form. For further information, additional forms, or questions, please contact Constance Hutchinson: cahutchinson@seattleschools.org
, 206-252-2140.

The Playground Committee Needs You!
The Playground Committee is looking for one volunteer to assist this coming school year:  Time commitment varies, however meetings are typically held the Tuesday of each week at 7p in Magnolia Village.

Grant Writer: You do not have to be an experienced grant writer! Two Grants have already been written, we need someone to take the “meat” of the information, and tweak it to be relevant for new grants we go after. This is an extremely important role, we can’t get to the finish line without this role!

A portion of our fundraising comes from matching volunteer hours, not only are these two roles critical to the success of this project, they are worth important volunteer hours!
Any questions, please contact Kathryn Ficarra.

A Thank You & Kindergarten Still Needs More Bookshelves and a 4th Grade Classroom Needs a Rug
Thank you so very much to Liz Barany, mother of Kenzie in Room 108 who donated a shelf to my classroom, Room 111.   Mrs. Armstrong is still looking for 3 more shelves, but is so appreciative that this Mom who doesn’t even have a child in her class would bring that shelf right to the door of her room!   Mrs. Armstrong is in need of 3 more bookshelves that are about 3 ft. high (no more than 4 ft.) in order for students to be able to reach books safely and to be able to select books independently. In addition, the room could also use a drying rack for the student artwork.  Ms. Hafzalla's 4th grade classroom is in need of a rug size 15'x8' or 14'x7'.
