A message from the Chair of Council

With Halloween and Bonfire Night now behind us, I had the pleasure of attending my fifth Remembrance Sunday parade, service and wreath-laying ceremony at Browgate on behalf of the Town Council, alongside Baildon’s district councillors, MP and representatives from the armed forces, Police and churches.  Councillor John Turner, Vice Chair of the Council, was similarly pleased to attend the service at Tong Park and he later joined me in the parade.  We both took pride in wearing Baildon’s chains of office, which have now been cleaned and repaired, courtesy of the Lord Mayor’s Office at City Hall.  The chains have had only three public outings, that we know of, since 1974 and will be returned to public display at Baildon Library in the New Year.

I would like to thank everyone who contributed to Remembrance Sunday.  The Royal British Legion co-ordinate proceedings and are expecting once again to have collected thousands of pounds through the Poppy Appeal.  Invitations and accommodation are provided by the Soldiers’ & Sailors’ Association from their clubhouse at The Shroggs  and we were honoured to be joined by the Deputy Lieutenant for West Yorkshire.  The cadets and marching band were, as ever, superb and the Police ensured a safe road closure. Reverend Sandra Benham, Vicar of St John’s, led two services at her first Remembrance Day since starting in post less than a year ago and I would like to both commend and welcome her.  Thanks also to the choir and organist at St John’s.

I was struck by numerous things during the afternoon.  Firstly, how good it is when everyone comes together for community occasions – but I feel sure even greater co-operation and friendship can be achieved.  Second, the importance of our local institutions as the structures which strengthen our community.  We must protect and enhance them.  Third, the great efforts, entirely in kind, to which our residents go to make these things happen.  Fourthly and perhaps most importantly, how we must remember and seek to understand the events and troubles of the past.  By this I certainly include ensuring our memorials are well-maintained – but more broadly that we apply what we have learned to our everyday actions in Baildon and beyond.

With best wishes,
Joe Ashton
Chair of Baildon Town Council

Christmas Spirit back to light up Baildon on the 27th November

Local shops have once again joined the Baildon Town Council to put together a spectacular display of Christmas lights to be twinkling throughout the festive period. As well as lights in the village centre, the display will reach Coach Road, Threshfield and St Johns Court on Otley Road, ensuring all Baildon residents can enjoy spectacular displays.

The lights will be switched on as part of a family event on Friday 27th November. The Baildon Ladies Choir will kick off the event at 6pm, encouraging everyone to join in some favourite carols, followed by Chair of the Town Council Joe Ashton switching on the lights at 6:30. The Hall Royd Brass Band will then entertain the crowd from 6:30 to 7:30.

As well as the music, Sponge Tree will be there again to help children create a Christmas Tree decoration, giving the decorations a personal touch. The co-operative are also generously providing refreshments to revellers, as part of their ongoing commitment to support the community.

Councillor Gill Dixon said “Everyone in Baildon is welcome to join us at our Christmas Lights switch on starting at 6pm on Friday 27th November. In previous years, young and old have enjoyed getting into the festive spirit with Christmas songs and carols led by a local choir – a real community event. Also this year, free nibbles provided by the co-op. Come and join the count down at 6:30, and see Baildon light up for Christmas!”

Thanks must be given to Christmas Plus Limited, the local contractor who maintain the lights, as well as Mark Scrimshaw, the Town Council Environment Warden, who has worked hard to ensure everything is in tip top shape for the event.

PROPOSED RELOCATION OF WESTGATE POST OFFICE

Post Office is planning to relocate the post office services from Westgate to McColls at number 4 Northgate.

Most of the normal services will be retained and there will be additional opening hours including half day on Sunday.

The Council has said that it is broadly in support of the move but would like the post office to reconsider the removal of its Passpost Check and Send Service, which the Council believe is vital to a local community. The Council has also asked Post Office to assess Traffic Management in and around the area of the new premises.

If you would like to have your say you can complete the Post Office's online survey or make comment here
