November 2 Luncheon
Maya Soetero-Ng, M.A., Ph.D.
Kerrie Urosevich, Ph.D.
Ceeds of Peace: Bridging School, Community, and Family
Many of the skills of peacebuilding that we consider most important begin with the letter C, hence the Ceeds of Peace. The Ceeds include Critical Thinking, Courage, Conflict Resolution, Collaboration, Community, and Commitment. It is in the constellation of the Ceeds where meaningful peacebuilding occurs. This talk will focus on the Ceed of courage (physical, mental, moral) and the many things we can do to nourish courage in our keiki, community, and selves. Drs. Maya Soetero-Ng and Kerrie Urosevich will share activities, resources, and tools to help develop action plans that our members can use to plant the Ceeds of Peace in their own lives, families, and communities.
Dr. Maya Soetoro-Ng, Founder, Ceeds of Peace
Maya Soetoro-Ng MA PhD, has a rich background in global and multicultural education. Maya was born in Jakarta, Indonesia and later moved with her family to Hawai‘i. From 2007 to 2008, Maya was an avid campaigner for her brother, President Barack Obama, where she worked on outreach to teachers, women, and Latino and Asian-Pacific Americans. Part of her campaign work involved visiting schools and discussing Obama’s education platform. Maya has an MA in Secondary Education from New York University and a PhD in International Comparative Education from the University of Hawai‘i. Her doctoral research explored the politics of multicultural education and critical pedagogy through creative writing. From 1996 to 2000, she taught and developed curriculum at a progressive public middle school in New York City. From 2000 to 2007, Maya was a lecturer at the University of Hawai‘i College of Education, where she taught multicultural education and educational theory. She also taught at La Pietra, a school for girls, where she facilitated classes on world cultures, U.S. history and the constitution; and Peacemakers, a course she designed to teach the power of nonviolence. Later, she worked as an Education Specialist at the East West Center, facilitating exchange between teachers in Asia and the United States. More recently, Maya worked as an Assistant Professor and University Coordinator, at the University of Hawai’i’s Institute for Teacher Education, where she taught multicultural education, peace education, and social studies methods. She has also authored a children’s book, “Ladder to the Moon”, that was inspired by her mother and her two daughters. Maya currently holds the position of Director of Community Outreach and Global Learning at the University of Hawai’i’s College of Social Sciences, which houses the Matsunaga Institute for Peace.
Dr. Kerrie Urosevich, Founder, Ceeds of Peace
Kerrie Urosevich MA PhD, has spent the past 20 years in community mobilization and peacebuilding. Kerrie is currently the Governor’s Early Childhood Coordinator for the state of Hawaii. Previously, she co-founded Lead4Tomorrow, a violence-prevention leadership organization, and Family Hui, a program committed to ensuring children are safe, healthy and thriving. For ten years, she ran her own mediation and facilitation consultancy, Can U Summit, working with communities and organizations in transition. She also serves as Affiliate Faculty at the Matsunaga Institute for Peace at the University of Hawai‘i Manoa, teaching an array of undergraduate and graduate peace and conflict resolution courses. Kerrie dedicates her time as a board member to the following organizations: Montessori Community School, serving children age 2 to 6th grade; The Association for Conflict Resolution – Hawai‘i Chapter, providing facilitation, mediation and negotiation workshops; EPIC ‘Ohana, working to strengthen families and enhance the welfare of children and youth; and MPANZI, a Kenya based organization supporting families with children prenatal to age 7. Kerrie received her Ph.D. in Political Science with a specialization in conflict resolution and public policy, from the University of Hawai‘i Manoa. She received her Master’s Degree in International Policy from the Monterey Institute of International Studies, and a Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management. Kerrie has traveled extensively in over 26 countries and lived and worked in Japan for four years. She is a parent of three children, who ground her in all of her work.

The holiday season is fast approaching and our annual meeting is just a few weeks away. Reflecting upon the past year, I am honored to have been part of such a dynamic group of women leaders. This experience has re-enforced for me what a special group of ladies OWL brings together. At a local level, I am convinced that there is no other organization that fosters the professional and personal growth that OWL provides. OWL truly is a place where women from all sectors can come together to find support, mentorship and opportunity.
The success of OWL would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of your OWL Board. Just to name a few things your Board does, they recruit new members, secure our guest speakers, manage our finances, and publish our newsletter. The Board does all of this on a volunteer basis and from the goodness of their hearts. A big thank you to my Board for making 2015 a memorable year!
Our last speakers of 2015 will be Maya Soetoro-Ng and Kerrie Urosevich. They will be speaking on the topic of Leadership Identity and Peaceful Leadership. I am sure it will be an educational and thought provoking presentation. Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend this last meeting as I ready myself for the birth of my daughter, Ella. But, please help me in welcoming your incoming President, Kate Braden. She has served on your Board for many years and she is ready to bring her energy and leadership to the membership. Congratulations Kate!
Please enjoy the holiday season with your family and friends and thank you again for allowing me to serve as your 2015 OWL President. See you in January!
Aloha,
Julie

Laura Beeman
Head Coach, UH Rainbow Wahine Basketball
University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa by Kristi Bates
Laura Beeman's meteoric rise to success as the head coach of the University of Hawai‘i's Women's Basketball team led her to be named the 2015 Big West Coach of the Year. Under her guidance the 'Bows earned a Big West best conference record of 14-2, and a spot in their third consecutive WNIT tourney. With those successes under her belt, it was quite a surprise when she took her name out of the running for the head coaching job at the University of Utah, which would have paid nearly double her current salary. But to Laura, what staying in Hawaii offered was worth much more. "It's all about the Aloha. I love Hawaii, the lifestyle here, and the people," she says. The reality of that feeling hit her months after a heart-breaking first-round elimination from the WNIT, when she was able to put things in perspective.
It all began with her parents who have been married for over 67 years. They owned three pharmacies, and she recalls that they always had that "aloha" spirit, often times giving things away to families that were facing hard times. They were her earliest role models. Relationships are everything to Laura. She believes that you can't put a price tag on opportunities to shape the lives of her players, who she feels has given her as much in return. One player in particular, stand out Shawna-Lei Kuehu, especially touched her. As a rising basketball star and young mother, Shawna's determination, courage and hard work led her to become an outstanding player on the court, and an inspiration to all off the court.
Laura, herself, is no stranger to hard work. Self-admittedly a terrible undergraduate student, she followed the advice of a teacher and ended up earning two master's degrees! Those life-changing moments become the opportunities. "I teach my players to be confident, empowered, and to love themselves. It's ok to make mistakes," she says.

OWL Pau Hana
Thank you for attending our annual Pau Hana event at the Outrigger Canoe Club on October 15th, 2015 from 5:00-7:00pm.
It is always so great to see our OWL sisters and guests having a great time catching up and networking. I personally got to know a few of the guests who attended and hope that they decide to become members. The big winner of the evening was Kathy Perkins, who was lucky enough to get a 2 night’s stay at the Parc Hotel. Thank you for participating in our prize give away and making it a fun experience for those who attended.
The Pau Hana really gives members a way to get to know each other at a very low key venue. There was a lot of excitement about our last meeting of the year, and to hear our annual speaker! If you have not done so yet, invite some friends in the community who would appreciate coming to our luncheon. Hope to see you next year at our annual Pau Hana.

2015 Treasurer's Report and Estimated Year End Financial Overview
We’ve had another amazing year; heard from phenomenal women from a variety of careers many of whom had the courage to step outside their comfort zones; and bonded with our awesome OWL sisters. It has been an honor to serve on your Board and as your Treasurer.
Revenue from dues is approximately $800 more than budgeted and guest lunches were $1,515 above budget. Adjusting the budget for the cancellation of the spring pau hana, total revenues were more than anticipated, which offset the increased expenses, due to increases guest attendance to the luncheons meetings; resulting in a positive $290 net income over budget.
Current membership as of October 19, 2015 is 77; 75 full year and 2 for the second half of the year. The October Pau Hana Mixer was projected to break-even. This networking event earned less than $81 and not intended to be revenue items.
Figures for part of October and all of November and December are estimated amounts. Estimated End of Year financial statements will be available at the November annual meeting. Feel free to contact me with any questions.
Respectfully submitted,
Kathy Perkins, Treasurer
Wahine Forum
Tuesday, October 13 Hilton Hawaiian Village
On Thursday, October 13th, several of our OWL members represented the organization at the 8th annual Wahine Forum which was held at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Hotel. This year’s theme was “Succeeding Together”.
It was a record-breaking attendance of over 800 female professionals, all there to gain information and soak in knowledge shared by experts in their fields on leadership and career building skills. Topics ranged anywhere from Building Your Personal Brand, Persuasion & Negotiation, Purposeful Networking and Making the Most of Mentoring for Career Success.
Some interesting tips/advice relayed at the conference were:
Confidence AND Competence = Success
Don’t be afraid to admit you don’t know
Don’t let your ego get the best of you
To be successful, be nice. Cooperation begets cooperation.
Listen actively to build bridges, relationships
The keynote speaker, Susan Colantuano – CEO of Leading Women (one of the world’s premier consulting firms supporting corporate initiatives to advance women), left us with a great message:
“Leadership is using the greatness in you to achieve and sustain extraordinary outcomes by engaging the greatness of others.”
Besides the great workshops and speakers, it was good to see the increasing interest in the attendees wanting to get involved with a professional womens organization. Hopefully, the result of participating in the Wahine Forum again this year will materialize in new members!!
