How to NEVER be a boring Dancer by learning Musicality!
A Salsa dancer who leads asked me how to avoid being a boring dancer if he only leads the same moves over and over again? He asked if he must always learn new patterns to be exciting to dance with?
My answer: No, You don't need an endless supply of different moves to be an exciting leader, you need to be MUSICAL!
What is Musicality in Partner Dancing?
Musicality is when your body movements MATCH the highlights, speed, stops and instrumentation of each specific part of the song you are dancing to.
How do you learn Musicality?
You need to understand timing and phrasing of music. It is SIMPLER than you think! Since most music is 4/4 Rhythm (i.e. 4 quarter notes) the music is broken down in sections of 4 beats!
A DJ taught me this because DJ's know when to mix in one song to another seamlessly without losing the beat... it usually happens every 8 groups of 4 beats. Example:
How does this apply to Dancing?
Well in Salsa, for example, the forward & back Basic take up 2 sets of 4 beats
eg. (1,2,3,4) (5,6,7,8)
fwrd basic back basic
When changing rhythms or accenting stops, the changes usually occur after
8 groups of 4 beats = 4 sets of basics
If you would like to understand this more clearly, it can be easier explained in my musicality workshop which I will co-host with a Latin Music percussionist. You will understand Salsa music in a whole new way and make each dance unique with your partner so you will NEVER be boring again!
