F3 Columbia News

10/28/2015

Your Cola news man Paperboy is here to deliver the news in a fresh and enjoyable format.  I hope that you enjoy these periodic updates on the happenings of our fair city.  After this last month of devastation, it means a lot for YHC to provide each PAX with serious news items while providing a bit of satire at the same time.  I hope this word reaches you and provides some semblance of sanity in light of everything else that is going on in the world.

Flood Update

YHC has no other way to open this newsletter without touching on the catastrophic event that befell our great city this month.  I would be doing those impacted a great disservice if I failed to recognize the tremendous loss that many of our fellow brothers experienced.  And I wouldn't want to minimize the awesome efforts put forth by not only F3 Columbia PAX but numerous other people from around and outside our state.  I can only say I'm deeply sorry to those who were negatively impacted. At the same time, words can't fully express the exceptional generosity of those who provided so much support and time.

GoFund Me Update
In the wake of recent flooding, F3 received significant cash contributions through a GoFundMe account. These donations were solicited to assist F3 pax directly affected by the disaster with any additional funds earmarked for broader flood relief, and they have already begun to be distributed to those in need.

Going forward, an oversight committee has been established to provide complete transparency for the use of the money. Here are the members of this committee who have all agreed to serve:

·         Jimmy “Brother Si” Parris, Member of the Clergy

·         Jonathan “Mission” Vipperman, Dispenser of Hugs and Goodwill

·         Chris “EZ” Nicholson, Certified Public Accountant

Additionally, the Nan’tans of the three Midlands Regions and South Carolina will provide guidance. Our intent is to quickly identify needs and then to place these funds where they can have the most impact.  The generosity of F3 Nation and the public at large has been staggering. They are honored to have this trust placed upon them, and they will work diligently and intelligently to be good stewards.

MudRun Update
YHC was thrilled to be on the scene for this past weekend's MudRun.  F3 Nation showed up in tremendous numbers and needless to say, dominated the overall leader board.  Much respect to Columbia's own Team Hammer who walked away with the coveted Busted Paw award for overall F3 winner, and naturally, the overall event championship.  With all due respect to Splinter's statement that it shouldn't count since Team South Beach was not present to defend their title, it was a tremendous performance.  Join me in congratulating Team Hammer on their accomplishment.  For your victory Hammer, I say, 'You Can't Touch This.'

Not one to report from the safety of the #beerboat, YHC was honored to represent one of our 4 #Mission teams.  Even though I earned a late call up due to Mission's untimely injury, it was an unforgettable experience to work with these men and cap an incredible journey.

T-Claps to Heist for Q'ing this event for all of us.  He did an amazing job with coordinating this for over 400 PAX from 10 states.  Check out his back blast here:

Mission Update
#Segway to our next update, Robber is still looking for men to step up and help mentor those who are still in the program.  Please reach out to him if you are interested:

We're still looking for a couple guys to step up and lead at the Mission by committing to mentoring a man who has completed the first stage (3 months) of the residential substance abuse program. You don't have to know anything about substance abuse to mentor. The OGM needs fine, upstanding men from the community (that's you) to mentor these men. The time commitment is small-ish, and the rewards are huge. Contact Robber for more info.

11/7/15 LEAP's
We are less than 2 weeks out from one of the biggest expansion weekends for F3.  Brothers from F3 Columbia have their hands all over these launches, but we still need help from each of you.  First, reach out to all the #sadclowns you know in Knoxville, Savannah and Augusta.  Have them submit their info at

http://f3nation.com/welcome/.

Second, reach out to those involved to see how you can help out at a workout.  Hop in the #clowncar and Q a workout or just share in the experience of a launch.  Contact Chaser to learn how you can make an impact in this expansion triple jump.

F3 Columbia is heading up the Knoxville launch with Chaser and AlterBoy organizing events.  F3 North Augusta is handling Augusta while F3 Summerville is leading Savannah.  Here are some details regarding Knoxville

Knoxville Launch #ClownCar:  Chaser and Alterboy will be heading to Knoxville on Friday 11/6 and are looking for more PAX to load up the #clowncar and help bring the classic F3 Columbia energy to the launch.  They will leave on Friday morning, scout the AO in the afternoon and then meet Knoxville men for beverages and dinner Friday night.  They’ll lead the launch workout the next morning, attend #coffeteria and then tailgate before the 4pm football game.  The plan is to drive back to Columbia after the game to be home with their families on Sunday.  If you want in on this whirlwind tour of Knoxville please let Chaser know asap (pjr@swblaw.com).:

Cottonmouth
If you are not helping out with one of the 11/7 LEAP's, then give yourself a man card check, and look into participating in this year's Cottonmouth on 11/7.  This year's event will start at 6:00 AM at Seven Oaks Park and 'trek' 8-10 miles to Harbison State Forest.  This is an excellent opportunity for those who have never experienced a #CSAUP event, while another chance for those seasoned PAX to test themselves.  Look to Pothole for more info, and see the event pre-blast:

F3 Nation 5 Year Anniversary
It may be hard to believe, but F3 is turning 5 this New Year's Day.  It seemed like only yesterday when a couple of fellas decided to break from the norm of workout groups and stale gyms and decided to hold each other accountable and #getbetter.  A convergence to trump all convergences is planned for next Spring, along with a 2nd F event that will top them all (maybe not a #unicornslaughterhousedeathmatch party, but close).  Details are still being finalized, but see the info listed below:

F3 5-Year Anniversary Celebration

An F3 Nationwide Event

When: March 5, 2016, 7pm to 11pm
Where: The Fillmore Charlotte - 1000 North Carolina Music Factory Blvd, Charlotte, NC 28206
Who: All F3 pax and their M’s.
When that initial workout was launched on 1/1/11, no one could have predicted 5 years ago what F3 would become. We invite the entire F3 Nation to come together to celebrate this milestone! This will be a catered event with a cash bar and entertainment provided by the Bad Daddies, an awesome cover band out of the QC. Auction items will be available for bid with proceeds going to F3 Foundation. For those coming in from out of town who are interested in staying the night, we are looking to arrange a block of rooms with transportation to the venue. If you are in town on the morning of Saturday March 5th, join us for a convergence workout. FiA Metro will also likely be holding their own convergence if the M’s would like to join.
Here is the link to 1) RSVP so we can get a head count, 2) indicate if you are interested in a hotel room and 3) let us know if you might join us for the convergence workout.  Tickets for the event will depend on the number of attendees, but are expected to be less than $50 per person.
Mark your calendars – you won't want to miss this!

2nd F - Fellowship

Boris continues to push up numbers at HDHH at Henry's, but we continue to see the same ugly ol' faces each week.  Do what you can to make an appearance and share some stories with your brothers.  You should also try to get to Thursday lunches at Salsarita's.  When was the last time you got free parking in the Vista?

XMAS Party
The XMAS party is still on for 12/15 at King's Grant Clubhouse.  Look for more info to come regarding food, drink and merriment.  Boris will provide the mistletoe and we may even get a red suit and fluffy white beard for our F3 SC Nantan, ol' Swaint Nick.  I'm sure everyone's 2.0's would love to sit in his lap while he does air chair.
3rd F - Faith

Sled is looking for someone to lead a year long Faith challenge.  This could include reading the Bible for the first time, scripture memory challenges or something new to build and test yours and your fellow brother's faith.  Reach out to Sled if you are interested.

Get to know your other AO’s:

AO Spotlight – Ramble

AOQ – Costanza

There are many running AO's out there in F3 nation, but I’d argue there is not one like Ramble.  Ramble has attracted some of F3 Columbia’s finest athletes.  We compete for the best race times, best pace overall, but especially for the coveted number one spot on the Strava segment.  These men are fierce competitors, but are also the best of friends.  Unlike bootcamp AOs, Ramble, and all running AOs, meet three times weekly which allows for a very strong 2nd F to develop.  In turn a very high level of accountability develops.  Once you are a regular, you can expect an email, text, tweet, or face to face confrontation questioning your latest fartsack.  If a Ramble man has a bad run, or is feeling down on their performance, it is the other Ramble guys who will lift him up and get behind him and push him until he is back on his feet.  I’ve experienced this first hand.

Being known as the fastest running group tends to ward off FNGs, though we have had our share.  You should all know that Ramble started as Amble.  I began running in F3 Columbia’s early days, June 2013.  I had just started running again following my achilles tendon repair.  At that time, Amble was the only running AO, being only 2 weeks old at the time.  I was running a 9:30 - when I had a fast day.  On most run days, I was completely lost.  We were running in Forest Acres and I didn’t know any of the streets.  I ran with my phone in my back pocket, not as much to keep track of my run, but to make sure I could make it back to the AO if, or, um, when I lost sight of Subprime’s back.  It was running with these men though that allowed me to improve.  Today, I’m not the fastest guy out there, I keep up, but it is these men that continue to challenge me to be better.

Everyone should be aware that Ramble is not an exclusive club.  All are welcome.  Get your feet warmed up in the other running AOs, then take Ramble for a spin.  If you do, don’t be discouraged if you get left behind.  Take that as a challenge to make yourself better.  If you want to really improve your running skills, Ramble is the place to be.

***Special Invitation to all F3 Men, #Ramble plans a Halloween edition of our 5k.  Come dressed as your favorite PAX.  If you come dressed as KJ (Phish or Dead shirt required, or cutting your own hair) you can skip straight to #coffeeteria at Starbucks in 5 Points.  We will also honor OC with the passing of the shovel flag as he takes over the duties of Ramble AOQ.

As always, keep posting to your local AO and branch out to a new location.  Be sure to work on your form so that you're getting the most out of your workout.  It's easy to do half the work and be done with it, but you're not doing yourself any favors by selling yourself short.  You know you're better, we know you're better, so Man up and do it the right way.
