for November 7/8

Ottawa area events for families and kids

Lots to do this week with shows, stories from the Ottawa Storytellers, the Mini Maker Faire, and lots of hockey and football. Plus, if you're ready to start Christmas shopping (eek!), the Samko and Miko giant toy sale is this week.

The Samko and Miko Toy Warehouse sale comes back to the EY Centre, starting on Wednesday, November 4 and running through Sunday, November 8. People line up to be the first in the door on the first day, so if you are a serious shopper, get there early on Wednesday (hours listed here - opens at 8 a.m. Wed, 10 a.m. all other days); and if you're just a curious browser, wait until later in the week when the crowds die down (although selection will be smaller, too). There's usually good deals to be had on toys for young children and a good selection of books, too. Entrance is free but parking is $8 at the EY Centre.
The Lakeside Players put on a lovely holiday panko every year, and this year's event, Camelot, opens on Thursday, November 5, running through Sunday, November 8. There's daytime shows on both weekend days and the shows take place at the Ron Kolbus Centre in Britannia Park. Tickets are $12 adults, $10 teens, $7 kids, and you can reserve them for pickup at the theatre or just outright purchase online on their website.
The famous Rockcliffe Park Book Fair starts this Friday, November 6 and runs through to Sunday, November 8. It's a massive book sale at Rockcliffe Park Public School and the hours are Friday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Maker Faire is upping its game this year, with a big event this weekend (Saturday, November 7 and Sunday, November 8) at the Aberdeen Pavillion. What's a Maker Faire? It's a place for scientists, craftspersons, hobbyists, engineers, and artists to come together and show off all the cool stuff they are working on. There's tons of fascinating, cutting edge devices and inventions to check out. It's open from 10 to 5 each day.
On Saturday, November 7, head over to the Nepean Centrepointe Library for the annual Children's Festival led by the Ottawa Storytellers. There's workshops and presentations all day between 10 and 4 that share rhymes, pictures, and of course, many many stories with kids of all ages. See their website for a full schedule.
Handmade Harvest has been branching out with more shows this year, but this weekend brings us back to their signature event - the big pre-Christmas sale in Almonte. Visit the old town hall on Bridge Street between 9 and 4 on Saturday, November 7, and between 10 and 3 on Sunday, November 8, for some truly lovely local crafts - this sale is curated, so although it's smaller it's worth the drive for items that are all local and very high quality.
The NAC presents a cool play on Saturday, November 7 and Sunday, November 8, called Petit Pierre. It's the true story of a small deaf and mostly-blind man who went on to create many amazing mechanical inventions. It's meant for kids aged 8 and up and there are matinees at 1:30 on both weekend days; tickets start at just $15. Important note: the presentations are in French!
Saturday, November 7 is Girls Learning Code Day, a national initiative run by Google Canada to try to get more girls interested in coding. You can sign up on their website for an online class that runs between 10 and 4, or you can actually head down to the Aberdeen Pavillion at Landsdowne Park to take part in a live coding event (preregistration required; runs in concert with the Maker Faire above). It's free but a donation to the Ladies Learning Code foundation is recommended.
The Ottawa Redblacks have their last home game of the season on Saturday, November 7, at 4 p.m., versus Hamilton. Tickets start at $26 and availability is already low as of this writing, so if you want to go, act quickly.
The Aviation and Space Museum is planning some special events for Remembrance Day, and they start this Saturday, November 7 and Sunday, November 8. There's printmaking and a discovery cart both days; model airplanes on the Saturday; and a massed military band concert on the Sunday at 2 p.m. Most displays and activities will be repeated on November 11, as well. See their website for a full schedule of events.
