New Nursing Home at Pine Ridge

The Oglala Sioux Tribe is constructing a $16.5 million nursing home on the edge of the Pine Ridge Reservation in Whiteclay, NE. The nursing home will create 80 to 100 jobs and allow tribal elders and others to receive care close to the main Pine Ridge village. The 50-bed facility is expected to open in February or March of 2016.

ACL Launches 'What is Brain Health?'

The Administration for Community Living (ACL) has launched a campaign to provide information about how the brain changes over time and what steps people can take to help keep their brains sharp. The campaign also offers tips for talking with loved ones and health care practitioners about symptoms of disease or cognitive impairment if they arise. The Brain Health website is hosted by actress Marcia Gay Harden and includes tips and tools for promoting brain health, educational videos, links to social media, public service announcements, testimonials from real people, an interactive feature that shows how the brain changes with age, and an educator guide for community presentations.

Flu Vaccines among Younger and Middle-Aged Adults May Help Protect the Elderly

As colder weather approaches, so does the season for influenza. A recent study found that higher flu vaccination rates among young and middle-aged adults may lower the influenza risk among the elderly. The study estimated that a higher number of vaccinations among younger adults could have prevented about 1 in 20 cases of the flu in older adults.

The Native America Calling radio talk show highlighted caring for the caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s in a 1-hour program that aired October 1. Featured guests included Jan Dougherty from the Banner Alzheimer’s Institute and Lucinda Martin (Navajo) from the Navajo Area Agency on Aging.
