October 2015

Dear Friends, Supporters and Colleagues

Welcome to the SCT October e-bulletin.

SCT has been very busy these last few weeks. We are accepting bookings for our annual conference, Housing in Scotland: Learning from the Past, Building for the Future which is shaping up to be an incredibly interesting and important event. See below for more information.

We enjoyed an immensely successful evening at the Scottish Heritage Angel Awards on Monday 28th September: the evening was filled with inspirational stories of volunteer projects across the country, interspersed with stellar musical entertainment form the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. No sooner had the paint dried on our walls (the offices have been smartly redecorated) then we were back in the swing of things, tying up Doors Open Days and commenting on planning applications, most notably the Royal High School in Edinburgh.

As ever, if any group would like me or our Director, John Pelan, to meet with them or give a talk then please give us a call or drop us an email.

Booking is now open for the Scottish Civic Trust Annual Conference 2015

Housing in Scotland:
Learning from the Past, Building for the Future

Tuesday 24th November 2015, Linlithgow Burgh Halls

9.30am - 4pm
Action Plan for Housing in the Next Decade: 2011-2020'

The Scottish Civic Trust Annual Conference 2015 will tackle one of the most important issues facing society today - housing our population. How can we provide quality, well-built, sustainable and affordable homes without adversely impacting on communities already under pressure from over-development.

Everyone agrees that we need to build more houses but at what cost?  What lessons can we learn from the past - success stories and failures -  and what control do we have as citizens over housebuilding.

The conference will hear from industry experts and academics and will be of interest to everyone who wants to have a say in the future of housebuilding in Scotland.

Confirmed speakers include:

Scottish Heritage Angel Awards Ceremony

Heritage volunteers from across Scotland gathered at Edinburgh’s Royal Lyceum Theatre on Monday 28th September as the winners of the very first Scottish Heritage Angel Awards were revealed.

The volunteers, or ‘Angels’, involved in one of Europe’s most significant cemeteries, Scotland’s firefighting past, the country’s unique canal and waterway heritage, the safeguarding of a pair of historic buildings in the North of Scotland and an individual who has dedicated more than 20 years to Scotland’s archaeological sector were all celebrated as winners as they each received an Angel Award.

You can view films of the winners here.

Become an urban detective with Scotland's Urban Past!
Scotland's Urban Past

Scotland's Urban Past (SUP) is a nationwide community engagement initiative to uncover the history of Scotland’s towns and cities, led by Historic Environment Scotland (formerly Historic Scotland and RCAHMS) and supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

We support all kinds of projects which help people investigate, record, engage with and celebrate the stories of buildings, streets, parks and more. Every project stems from a local community, while we provide free training and resources to turn ideas into reality.

We offer training to suit the aims of community-led projects, but can include:
  • how to plan and manage your project
  • promoting your project
  • surveying and recording buildings
  • researching historical documents and maps
  • digital mapping and illustration
  • oral history recording
  • digital and paper archiving
Any community groups and youth clubs with project ideas relating to Scottish towns and cities with populations over 3,000 are encouraged to get in touch with us by emailing sup@rcahms.gov.uk.

We're also in the process of setting up a programme of training courses in different locations throughout Scotland, which will be free members of community groups to attend, even if they aren't involved with an SUP project.

Review of the Scottish Planning System

The Programme for Government 2015-2016 announced the Scottish Government’s intention to review the planning system. The Review Panel aims to achieve a quicker, more accessible and efficient planning process in order to build investor and community confidence in the system. The review will be undertaken by an independent panel, chaired by Crawford Beveridge, and also including Petra Biberbach and John Hamilton. The Panel will provide a strategic perspective and will be open to ‘gamechanging’ views and ideas.

The Panel would now like to invite written evidence from all interested parties. The closing date for written evidence is 1 December 2015.

New Community Greenspace Grants open for applications

Tesco has announced that the money raised from the 5p bag charge in Tesco stores will be used to pay for a large number of local projects to improve greenspaces in communities across Scotland, England and Wales. Projects that will get the green light as a result of the funding will include building new pocket parks, sports facilities, woodland walks and community gardens.

The first funding round of the programme opens for applications today and will close on 27 November 2015 at 12 noon. This will be your first chance to submit an application for a grant of between £8,000 and £12,000 to create better and happier places where you live, although there will be two funding rounds per year over the next three years.

Nominated projects will be whittled down to a shortlist of three for each store region, and in early 2016 Tesco customers will be able to vote both instore and online for which of the short-listed projects they want to see get the go-ahead, with winning projects announced shortly afterwards. Six projects will receive funding in each of the 48 Scottish store regions annually.
