Edupeg has partnered with two organisations, Action Volunteers Africa (AVA) and the Shine Trust (Shine), to pilot the ‘LiteraSEA Project’ (Shine, Edupeg, AVA). The purpose of this project is to improve the literacy levels and reading skills of 272 Grade 2
learners in three Edupeg supported primary schools in Gugulethu: Xolani, Intshinga, and Mseki Primary School. The LiteraSEA Project is a pilot project being implemented by 20 carefully selected LiteraSEA volunteers.
These volunteers are previously unemployed youth from the surrounding communities of Gugulethu, some of whom are past learners at the schools they are now supporting. The volunteers have been trained to implement Shine’s methodology of paired and shared reading in these schools. This project not only provides additional academic support for the schools, but also an opportunity for volunteers to gain work experience and professional development. We would like to see these volunteers go on to become teachers. Mrs Sakasa, principal of Xolani Primary, noted that 2 learners at her school have moved up a reading group and credited this improvement to the work the volunteers are doing.
For more information on the launch of the project which took place on
Mandela Day, read our blog.
Simnikwe Buso, a Litha Primary School learner, achieved in excess of 80% in ALL of her exams. Read about 'The Little Girl that could, in the Little School that did.' Well done Simnikwe!
Rising Above the Norm

Blog post on Mrs January, Grade 1 teacher, Eastern Cape. With 54 learners in a regular classroom she has 'abandoned the idea of a space for her desk' and released this for more room for the learners. Mrs January is an example that needs to be replicated in our schools. Read here for the full story.
We recently handed over concrete resources to 22 Standard Bank supported schools, across four provinces. The use of concrete materials for improved learning are vital. Teacher's feedback has been overwhelmingly positive at being able to now demonstrate a lesson using these materials. For learners to be able to visualise and interact with these resources brings a whole new element to their learning. "I would like to thank Edupeg for the material they have provided our classrooms with, as they create a conducive environment for learning. Learners are enjoying interacting with the apparatus and their participation is improving due to that." Ms Stuurman, Soyisile Primary School, Western Cape.
These Maths teachers were 'over the moon' excited touching, feeling and praising the materials. Left, is Mrs Makuyi, the Grade 5 teacher, and on the right, is Mrs Mnikathi, the Grade 4 Maths teacher, at Phephile Primary in KwaZulu-Natal.
Litha Primary School's garden turns ONE!

The sustainable food garden we crowd-funded for last year is officially one year old, happy birthday! We're happy to report the garden is thriving and being very well taken care of. The school have appointed a garden committee to care for the garden and ensure fresh produce is being yielded. The garden is not only a source for fresh produce and an inspiring learning space, but also a symbol of great pride for the school.
Edupeg’s website has recently undergone a makeover, please take a moment to visit it and read some of our latest blogs.
As we move into this fourth term, and as the national struggle for high quality education for all continues, we feel more committed than ever to supporting our teachers.
