Construction update. Through the hard work of many, the needed permits for the renovation of the Education Building have been received from the city of Southlake! Construction resumed last Saturday, and our Sunday School classes should be meeting in the newly renovated Education Building beginning Sunday, November 8. The schedule for the Worship Center remodel is also now set: work will begin on Monday, November 2, with a completion date of November 20. Worship services should not be affected by the construction.
Adult Sunday School. Pastor Nick leads adult Sunday School the first Sunday of each month. This Sunday he will be leading a conversation entitled "What the New Testament says about homosexuality." Come join us in the sanctuary near the Nursery entrance.
Thanksgiving food drive. Again this year we will be collecting food for the Fishes and Loaves Food Pantry. The pantry supports the Irving area and is a ministry of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Irving. Empty baskets will be distributed beginning this Sunday, November 1, along with a list of suggested items. Please select from the list of items (all nonperishable) and return the filled baskets to church by Sunday, November 15. They will be delivered to the pantry on Friday, November 20, at 10:00 a.m. (delivery volunteers will be needed).

We are also invited to help serve at Good Shepherd's annual community Thanksgiving dinner on Saturday, November 21. Over 300 neighbors are served at the dinner each year. Help is needed between 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Pastor Brad Carroll says, "“We are all thankful that our sisters and brothers at Abiding Grace are so generous in helping to stock the food pantry with so many wonderful gifts as well as partnering with us for the community Thanksgiving meal. With the increased demand I seriously doubt we could do it without you all.”

Good Shepherd is located at 2620 West Grauwyler Road in Irving, about a mile southeast of Irving Mall.
What I Learned in Sunday School Today
by Joan Lucas, Council Education Liaison

Joan concludes her visits with all our Sunday School classes with opening music and older elementary students.

This morning I joined the opening music time for children’s Sunday school which is led by Julie Nelson. We started with a song that listed all the books of the New Testament followed by another song with all the books of the Old Testament. I was impressed by how easily the children breezed through the lyrics.

Tambourines were brought out next and everyone was invited to join the band. I stayed in my seat next to George and Alyssa as we all sang along to “Do Lord Remember Me.”

Teacher Jon White then asked why this was the day to wear red.

“These were the only shorts I found,” replied George, whose shorts were as red as could be.

“Well, good thing because it’s Reformation Sunday!” said teacher Jon excitedly, and he explained briefly how Martin Luther helped start the Lutheran church over 500 years ago.
Teacher Julie ended our music session with a prayer before everyone dispersed to their classes. I followed George, Alyssa and Addison and their teacher, Chip Sakakeeny. We met their co-teacher, Terri Sakakeeny, in the church conference room where the children seemed to very much appreciate the fine swivel chairs.
“Let’s start with our circle up first,” said Teacher Terri. We swiveled in a circle and she asked the kids to share how they had helped to include others during the past week. This was a follow up to their previous lesson, which had been “Cliques are not part of God’s plan”.

George offered, “I went to my friend’s house and we ended up having another guy hang out with us, too.”

“I went to my friend Jasmine’s house,” said Addison when it was her turn, but for the most part the three children were quiet. This class was not the rambunctious Tambourine playing bunch. Terri was able to stir up a little more conversation with a “Guess which fact about me is false” game, and then we moved over to the conference table.

Here, the children listened very attentively as Teacher Chip told them the story of Martin Luther. Crafts and activities then followed with Bible verses written on scrolls and a list of treatises posted on a door. By the time the last activity was being done, which involved recording their voices onto an iPad, all barriers were down. Alyssa and Addison were leaning across the big table, giggling as they spoke into the iPad George held up for them.

What I was seeing was similar to scenes I had witnessed in the other Sunday School classes. Yes, this is a place where children are familiarized with Christian teachings, but more than that, this is also a nurturing environment that helps build relationships within our church. I’m not sure which is more important, but it seems that both ingredients are necessary for the kind of church Martin Luther may have had in mind so many years ago.
Faith and Film. On Sunday, November 15, 4:00-7:30 p.m., explore the meaning of forgiveness through the award-winning Norwegian film Troubled Water (subtitled). Jan, recently released from prison after serving time for the murder of a child, has always maintained his innocence. A gifted organist, he finds work at a Lutheran church in Oslo. The pastor assures him that all things can be forgiven. But can they? Come to the home of Marjorie Suchocki where we will watch the film (120 minutes), share a soup supper and discuss. Surely we will resolve the issues together, won't we? RSVP to Marjorie if you wish to attend (contact information published in the church directory).
"Clean the Church" morning. This Friday, October 30, at 9:00 a.m. is the monthly cleaning of the floors in the worship center. It goes quickly if enough people come. If you can help, please stop by.
Abiding Grace young adults. The young adults (ages 21-36) evening at Grapevine Craft Brewery was postponed due to last weekend's weather. The event has moved to this Friday, October 30. We will meet at the brewery, 906 Jean Street in Grapevine, at 7:00 p.m. for fun and fellowship. All are welcome, so bring your friends. If you have any questions, please contact Emily Nelson.
Daylight Saving Time ends this Saturday. Be sure to set your clocks back an hour and enjoy the extra sleep.
MCCC senior visits. This November Abiding Grace is partnering with Mid Cities Care Corps to help bring some Thanksgiving cheer to seniors in the area! To do this, Erin Perkins and Taylor Skoglund invite everyone to stick around after church on Sunday, November 15, to make a craft to deliver to a senior neighbor and to visit with them. If you’re feeling adventurous, you’re also invited to bring a pie to share with whomever you visit. To participate please email Taylor by Sunday, November 8.
Sound techs really, really, really needed! We need additional sound techs to serve during Sunday worship. Training will be provided. If interested in serving, please contact Wendy Daily at volunteer@abidinggracedfw.org or Phil Hart.

Veterans are invited to ride in pickup trucks: uniforms are optional but waving and smiling are mandatory. If you have questions please see member Brian Michel. Help us to make Grapevine the veteran capital of Texas.
