Whitley Residents & Neighbourhood Watch Association Meeting Update
Whitley continues to be blighted with parking problems.

Last week nearly 50 residents attended their meeting with the main concerns being parking along Abbey Road, The Avenue and other associated streets.

Mark, Roger, Hazel and Joel, a Coventry City Council Officer, were also present. During the 2.5 hour meeting there was a lot of discussion about the existing problems and how the situation could be improved.

Both Roger and Joel Logue, from the highways department, also explained how a residents’ parking scheme works and what is involved. In summary, the process usually takes at least a year, has to be initiated by the residents and can only be implemented if enough residents are agreeable.

Shortly a Streetwise Newsletter Consultation will be delivered to everyone on the estate. This consultation will feature the suggested scheme of installing yellow lines on Abbey Road and Leaf Lane, plus on all the corners of road junctions.

Everyone is encouraged to give their feedback on this consultation, as ‘no response’ is taken that you’re against the scheme.

Pedestrian Crossing on Whitley Bridge
A resident contacted Hazel asking why the signalized pedestrian crossing at the new Whitley Bridge doesn’t make the usual ‘beeping’ sound to indicate it’s safe to cross.

See reply to our secretary Lorraine from Ian Lewis in Traffic management..
Hi Lorraine,
I can answer this for you.
With respect to the push button units, if they are pressed and the signal detectors do not pick up any movement during that phase then they cancel out the call for the pedestrian phase. I will ask the signal team to run a check on the unit to make sure it is responding correctly.

On new signal installations, if they are in close proximity to other pedestrian crossing points, then they do not have audible units on them for safety reasons. If a blind or partially sighted person pressed the button and waited for an audible noise they could inadvertently hear a nearby crossing authorising them to cross and walk into a flow of traffic. There has been historic incidents of this around the Country and therefore the regulations on crossings have changed. New crossing now have a spinning dome fitted underneath the push buttons boxes which identify the correct time to cross
 Regards
Ian

Hazel to be the speaker at the Whitley History Group.
Hazel will be the speaker at the next Whitley History Group meeting on Tuesday 3rd November. She will be showing photos and talking about her year as the Lord Mayor of the City of Coventry.

The WHG has opened the invitation to any resident who would like to attend. Meetings are held at the Ibis Hotel, Whitley, starting at 7pm.

Inconsiderate & illegal parking

Mark has made a number of trips recently, at different times of the day, to visit Leaf Lane and Abbey Road, on both sides of the Whitley Bridge.

On one occasion he counted 27 cars displaying JLR passes parked in Leaf Lane, Whitley side.

Sadly, one car was found to be parked across a walkway completely blocking any access.

Mark believes the area is being monitored as he watched two parking wardens arrive during one visit.

He also spotted that some cars had been issued with a parking ticket.

Missing Drain Cover
A resident reported to Hazel that a small manhole cover was missing along the pavement in Arundel Road. Hazel reported it to Severn Trent and it was replaced within 24 hours.

We often complain when the utilities company’s don’t listen but in this case congratulations to Severn Trent for taking such prompt action.

Proposed new Poundworld store at Airport Retail Park
Last month we asked for your comments on a proposed new Poundworld store at Airport Retail Park. Here is the complete results of their survey.

Hazel

I thought you would like to see the results of the Consultation survey in the attached report.

As you will see, we had 204 responses of which 97% were in support.

The planning application is being submitted shortly.

Regards
