CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR ART AND CHANGE GRANTEES!
A total of $67,500 was granted to 28 women and trans* artists and cultural producers in Greater Philadelphia, supporting their work to address a range of social change issues.

Art and Change Grants are distributed twice a year and decisions are made by an independent peer review panel. The August 2015 review panel consisted of healing justice artist Qui Dorian (ACG '14), quilter and doll maker Ra’sheedah Bey (LTA '10), and filmmaker Wazmah Osman. Aarati Kasturirangan, director of programs at Bread & Roses Community Fund, facilitated the panel.
URSULA RUCKER AT FIRST PERSON ARTS FESTIVAL THIS FRIDAY
Leeway co-presents Ursula Rucker's (LTA '08, ACG '08) My Father's Daughter at the 14th Annual First Person Arts Festival. This one-woman show paints a courageously honest portrait of a family struggling to overcome the effects of domestic abuse and addiction, while learning to forgive. Weaving poetry, music, and video imagery, Ursula draws parallels between her mother’s life and her own, illuminating how her mother’s relationships and struggles have shaped Ursula into the woman she is today. Friday, November 6, doors open at 7:30pm at the Plays and Players Theater (1714 Delancey Pl). Tickets $15; and $12 for First Person Arts Members. Click here for more information. 
HAUNTING VOICES: SALON AND OPEN MIC ON NOVEMBER 19 
Twelve Gates Arts and Leeway present Haunting Voices, featuring performances by Jai Arun Ravine, Suzie Afridi, and Michelle Myers (LTA '14, ACG '11) and Catzie Vilayphonh (ACG '14, '10, LTA '10, WOO '02) of Yellow Rage. This open mic and salon celebrates the launch of Twelve Gates' newest exhibit, Ruins and Fabrications, which explores visual narratives of loss and futurity through the work of two women photographers, Gauri Gill and Annu Matthew. Journey among refashioned archives, while listening to stories told through comedy, spoken word and poetry. You too can tell your own story!

The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation announced the 2016 Artist as Activist Fellowship. This grant cycle focuses on the thematic frame of racial justice through the lens of mass incarceration. Deadline: December 7.
COMMUNITY NEWS
The Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival (PAAFF) features over 60 films, intimate discussions with filmmakers, and special programs on food, music, and culture. PAAFF takes place at International House from November 12-15 and at the Asian Arts Initiative from November 20-22. There will be a Free Community Screening Series from November 16-19 at multiple venues in South Philadelphia.

REMEMBERING GRACE LEE BOGGS
Leeway mourns the loss of our elder, the brilliant activist and philosopher, Grace Lee Boggs, who died on October 5 at 100 years old. Grace's belief that "Creativity is the key to unlock human liberation,” speaks to the essence of our work at the foundation. DJ Precolumbian's (Chaska Sophia LTA '13, ACG '11) new mix was featured in Mask Magazine, an online style publication. Mask contributor, Anjum Mubarak Asharia writes, "Featuring producers from across the Americas, South Africa, and elsewhere, Precolumbian has put together the kind of mix that begs for multiple listens." Betty Leacraft (ACG ’14, '09, LTA ’11, WOO ’99) will host a dedication ceremony of fabric banners created in her hand dyeing workshop, as well as a slide presentation of art quilts from the International Quilt Convention in Africa, at the Community Education Center (CEC) on November 18. The six-foot textile banners will permanently adorn the walls of the CEC’s dance studio. Betty Leacraft (ACG ’14, '09, LTA ’11, WOO ’99) and Black Quantum Futurism Collective â€“ Camae Dennis (ACG ’07), and Leeway board member Rasheedah Phillips â€“ will exhibit work at Reciprocity: Exhibiting Moments and Momentum from Neighborhood Time Exchange in West Philadelphia. Read More.
Jax Peters Lowell's (LTA ’09) newest book, The Gluten-Free Revolution (Holt, NY, February, 2015) was named one of the Top Ten Food Books of 2015 by the American Library Association Journal Booklist. This is the first time a gluten-free book has been ranked in a popular food literature list. Read More.
The Liberian Women’s Chorus for Change, featuring Fatu Gayflor (LTA '12), Marie Nyenabo (ACG '15)Tokay Tomah (LTA ’14, ACG ‘14), and Zaye Tete (ACG ’10) will perform at World Café Live on November 21. Read More.

 
Leeway staff member Melissa Hamilton will lecture at Temple University on November 11. The talk, entitled Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant?: Death and Dying in Contemporary Comics, will feature a reading from her graphic novel, Bookends, a story about the loss of her parents to cancer. Michelle Angela Ortiz's (ACG '13, '12, '05, LTA '08) Familias Separadas (Separated Families) mural series was featured in Hyperallergic, an online magazine. The series of temporary site-specific murals document stories of immigrant families affected by deportations in the city of Philadelphia. Read More.
Michelle Myers (LTA '14, ACG '11) will facilitate Girls Make Better Ninjas (Or I can't be angry, I'm Asian): an Exploratory workshop on Asian American/Pacific Islander (AAPI) Feminism, a free workshop on November 21 at the Asian Arts Initiative. The workshop, which is part of the Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival, is open to all but geared towards AAPI women and trans women. Read More.
Nicole Bindler's (ACG '15) article about her experience traveling to Bethlehem, Palestine to choreograph a dance with three young dancers from Diyar Dance Theater, was featured on thinkingdance.net, an online magazine. The performance explores the parallels between the conquest of Palestinian land and Palestinian women's bodies. Pat McLean (ACG ’11, '05, LTA ’06), in conjunction with Tomorrow’s Girls and Women presents UNSILENCED: The Color of Healing, a series of poetry-writing workshops in November and December throughout the city. Read More.
Patricia Goodrich (WOO '04, '03) will be among twenty international artists to attend the 4th International Symposium of PromART Haiti, November 19-December 3. Read More.
Leeway board member Rasheedah Phillips and artist and educator Daniel Tucker will explore the liberatory potential of language, and the relationship of writing to social justice and alternative conceptions of the future at the Slought Foundation's Future Perfect, a screening and workshop exploring future imaginaries from the New Right to the AfroFuturist Affair, November 3. Valerie Gay (ACG '14) and the neighbors of the 900 block of South Paxon Street in South West Philadelphia celebrated the completion of their Community Mosaic Wall in October. The project serves as a historical record of the community and brought neighbors together to beautify a wall that formerly divided their community.
