"None is travelling
Here along this way but I,
This autumn evening."

Every day is a journey, and the journey itself is home.

Matsuo Basho (1644-1694)

I thought about these verses from old Basho as I walked along Seventh Avenue on my way to Smalls this evening.  Sunday night - alone on the deserted windswept streets, cold autumn night.  I've been thinking about the transition of things.  The people we knew who come and go, came and went.  As years pass in a community there is the deepening of friendships and the creations of new ones.  There is the shedding away of old layers and then renewal as new layers emerge.  In our Jazz Community tragedy is absorbed by the whole.  Reflected on by the whole.  If there is a loss, we can console and reflect for each other.  We can justify and discuss or simply sympathize and feel.  The Jazz Community is a family and it seems each musician looks out for the other, is concerned for their musical brothers and sisters and are there for them.  We reconcile our losses and return to the music itself - that which binds us and gives us our resilience.  Jazz is a life-force.

Thanks to the goodwill of my friend Eric Wyatt, I had the privilege of meeting my lifetime hero, Sonny Rollins.  Sonny was at the Apollo Theater in Harlem to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Jazz Foundation and Eric got me back stage with him to Sonny's dressing room.  Sonny is Eric's Godfather - Sonny was tight with Eric's dad and considers Eric as his own family.  My impression of meeting Sonny: he's the most striking figure I could imagine.  Luminous - his skin had the most clear effervescent quality - he seemed to glow.  His beard was cloudwhite and trimmed so sharply that it seemed nearly sculpted.  His eyes were like fierce diamonds, something I'd never seen before, lasers that burrowed into my mind, unfathomable.  He wore a large black hat and if the Wizard Gandalf were real he might look like Sonny Rollins.  I shook his hand and stammered my appreciation to him for having such a huge, positive impact on my life.  Sonny was cordial.  A king, indeed.

Back now at our little basement club - our universe, I descend the stairs underground from the frigid streets into warm mayhem.  Musicians, tap dancers, fans, crazy fools and madmen, fakers and geniuses all mixed together there in a Smalls soup - Sunday night.  The spirit of this music lives on and we are the vessels in which to receive it and to share it - and to make it all of ours.  The journey itself is home and we live here.
