It has been busy year for Ngāti Koata and we look forward to updating you on the many initiatives and progress made to date at the AGM November 28th at Whakatū Marae.

It is not for the pākohe to polish itself

There are many ways this whakatauaki can be used in everyday settings. One of these talks to our 'actions speaking louder than our words'. When this happens others will speak of our deeds for us. Pākohe comes in a very raw form as shown in the background of this image. However when polished it's beauty is superior.

Takapourewa is home to the worlds largest Tuatara population and many other paleoendemic species.
Ngāti Koata have a long historical association and connection to Takapourewa.

There are opportunities through out the year for Ngāti Koata to participate in the activities on Takapourewa from research, translocations and tree planting trips. The capacity of Ngāti Koata Takapourewa volunteers is continuing to grow and we are able to support approved initiatives. This is a significant commitment, as these excursions are often between 7-10 days. In addition, Ngāti Koata plan to provide opportunities for our people to wānanga there, so watch this space.

Earlier this year some of our dedicated workers cut and prepared firewood for our people. The cultural allocation was one trailer load per household and priority was given to Ngāti Koata kaumātua and large families to help keep them nice and toasty through the colder months of the year.
This crew worked hard to ensure that the logs were cut and prepared and ready for pick up. In the future we would like to continue to supply our people with an allocation of firewood. This is currently funded by the Trust in the future we would like to see this project become more self empowering, self determining and self directed for our people with these skills and relevant tickets. What this looks like is up to us.

Changes around the office

We have been making small changes throughout our office spaces by making them more open and welcoming for our people to come up, visit and collaborate in. We do hope that you will feel welcomed and included when you come in.

Effective communication is an ongoing concern and we are continually trying to be more effective with this.

With Adrienne's experiences in the IT world our tools of communication are expanding everyday to address this need and professional development on their application is an ongoing process.

Facebook: has been the main form of communication as you can inform the Iwi on the many initiatives and opportunities that are coming up. You are also able to private message information and it is instantaneous and seek expressions of interests quickly. It is an excellent tool for private messaging between iwi members and the office.

As of November 2013 of the 2.8 million people who accessed social media sites 1, 950,000 use facebook.

The Ngāti Koata facebook page has 1, 372 on it’s friends list.

If you have received this pānui and you know of whānau members who have not, it can be for one of the following reasons;
1. They are not registered with Ngāti Koata therefore we do not have their contact details OR
2. They are registered with Ngāti Koata but we do not have their updated information.
3. You whakapapa into Ngāti Koata but are not registered and we do not have your current contact information.

We are seeking expressions of interest for the provision of the catering for the weekend of our AGM from Friday, 27th November to Saturday, 28th November 2015.

You will be expected to provide the dinner on the Friday evening, breakfast on Saturday, a light refreshment for whanau on arrival at the marae to the AGM and the hakari once the AGM and hui-a-iwi has finished.

You will also be responsible for the cleaning of the wharekai.

We expect that the dinner Friday and the hakari will be for approximately 80 - 100 people while the breakfast will be for maybe 20 and the light refreshments on arrival at the AGM will be for around 80 as well.

There may also be light refreshments required around 12.00 pm, but this will be confirmed.

You will need to supply a menu with costings to the office by Friday, November 7th 4.00 pm if you wish to submit your interest.

Further discussions will be had with the successful candidate.
