In the Loop

Higher Education Programs at NYU Steinhardt

Question: What is In the Loop?
Answer: Our new monthly newsletter!

In the Loop is designed to connect current masters and doctoral students, alumni, faculty, prospective students, internship site supervisors, and other friends of the program. In each issue we will highlight the impressive work of our students and faculty, share important program news, promote upcoming events, and place a spotlight on our alumni community.

This is a place to share your stories and triumphs, find professional inspiration, and engage in the kind of supportive community we strive to create as educators. Put shortly, it's a way to stay In the Loop!

Welcoming Stella M. Flores, Associate Professor of Higher Education

Much of Flores' nationally-renowned work stands at the intersection of opportunity and policy in higher education. With critical issues of affirmative action and college completion making new headlines in industry publications, her expertise is timely and highly sought-after. In addition to her professorship, she will also hold the position of Director of Access and Equity within the Steinhardt Institute for Higher Education Policy. Flores brings research expertise and an important, timely policy focus to our programs.

In Memoriam: Blaise Baldonado

After graduating this past May 2015, Blaise returned home to Hawaii where he accepted a position as the Director of the Office of Student Activities & Leadership at Chaminade University of Honolulu. He passed away just months later in August. Blaise worked in NYU's Residential Life as a Resident Life Assistant and served as Recruitment and Orientation Co-Chair for NYU's Association of Student Affairs Professionals (ASAP). He will be remembered for his positivity, his bright smile, and his moves on the dance floor. To all his work he brought a thoughtfulness and deep understanding that faculty continue to remember. The Higher Education and Student Affairs Program along with ASAP held a celebration of his life on Friday, October 23.

Five Generations of Higher Ed at School of American Ballet

The School of American Ballet (SAB) at Lincoln Center, one of the premier dance academies in the United States, has a history of working closely with NYU Steinhardt’s Higher Education programs. The student and residence life staff of the school includes Kelly Novitski (MA ’03) Dean of Student & Alumni Affairs; Sion Harrington (MA ’07) Director of Student & Residential Life,; Meg Nieslanik (MA ’15) Residence Hall Coordinator; and Assistant Resident Hall Directors-- Ariel Bloomer (MA ’16), Hillary Engleman (MA ’17) William Jones (MA ’17). Sion sees the gap between theory and practice close as grads work with each other to create developmental programming: “When they can bring their coursework into our halls, they begin to better understand the value and power of their work on both micro and macro levels. As a site supervisor who is also an NYU Higher Ed graduate, I find that our shared understanding of their academic experience heightens these connections and enhances the guidance I am able to provide during their time at NYU.”
