At Gordon Neighbourhood House we evaluate the impact of our work using a variety of methods.

Here is a snapshot of some of the fun we had in
September & October 2015:

- Creative Playtime Caregiver/Parent

100% of Creative Playtime Caregivers/Parents indicated that they have met someone new and feel more included and connected to their community as a result of attending Creative Playtime.

In September 2015, we harvested 64 pounds of produce from our urban farm sites for our various community food initiatives. We harvested eggplant, kale, chard, rainbow carrots, zucchini, buttercup squash, cucumber, heirloom tomatoes, yellow cherry tomatoes, and a wide variety of herbs.

The Clean Team, a partnership of Gordon Neighbourhood House and the West End Business Improvement Association, spent 104 hours on West End streets, collecting 52 bags of litter. The team received 91 thank yous from community members and passers-by.

3rd Annual West End Food Festival

“Great workshop, great facilitator. Brought up a lot of interesting perspectives not often connected with discussions about food. I really appreciated the queer-friendly approach and discussion of gender identity/expression and food.”

The 3^rd Annual West End Food Festival (September 17-22) featured 24 events or workshops, and 1 forum (Eat Think Vote Vancouver) and engaged more than 670 participants.

In addition, more than 50 associations, programs, businesses, and organizations helped to promote, host, or facilitate West End Food Festival events or workshops.

85% of workshop participants indicated that the workshop they attended celebrated the diversity of food and cultures in the community.

94% of workshop participants indicated that they learned something new from the workshop they attended about the food system.

88% of workshop participants indicated that the workshop they attended helped them meet and connect with people and/or the neighbourhood.

GNH is always Abuzz

You may not know this, but Gordon Neighbourhood House is also home to the Vancouver Urban Farming Society, the Metro Vancouver Alliance, WEArts, the Queer Arts Festival and of course the Attic Thrift Store.

Goodness: Recipes & Stories is now available.

Both an interview with Gordon Neighbourhood House's Executive Director, Paul Taylor and recipes from Chef Peter Nguyen are featured in the new cookbook.

2015 Young Ideas Retreat

Last weekend, members of the Young Ideas Steering Committee embarked on a trip to Tofino for their annual retreat. Ocean Village Resort located directly on Mackenzie Beach generously donated accommodations and meeting space for the group to strategize about the upcoming year.

The retreat provided a perfect opportunity for the group to reflect on past initiatives and brainstorm future events. By the end of Saturday night the group had drafted a complete calendar of events for 2016. Some event ideas include: a mock wedding, personal finance workshops, Brews and Chews 3, gardening workshops, a talent show, clothing swaps, and a back-to-prom dance. Stay tuned for more information as the group plans these events.

A huge thank you to our friends at Ocean Village Resort (Tofino, B.C.) for lending their space for the 2015 Young Ideas Planning Retreat.

Game On

Starting on Thursday October 27th, Young Ideas hosted Game On, a free, monthly board games night at Gordon Neighbourhood House.

While a games night isn’t a new concept, the recent revival of tabletop gaming has introduced new and exciting games by independent writers and designers. Board games have moved beyond big mass-market titles like Monopoly or Guess Who? to include more diverse plotlines, strategies, and game mechanics.

These Modern board games are fast, and are more cooperative than their traditional counterparts, with players generally competing for points rather than to eliminate each other. As a result, people from all walks of life are turning to games as a way to replace Facebook with face time.

Game On takes place from 7:00-9:00pm at Gordon Neighbourhood House. Snacks and light refreshments will be served.

Thank you to everyone who came out to Young Ideas' first Game On at Gordon Neighbourhood House. It was a great night! See you for the next one on November 26th at 7pm.

Welcome Chantille and Sebastian to the GNH Family!

Please join us in welcoming Chantille Viaud to Gordon Neighbourhood House as our new Manager of Community Food Initiatives. Chantille brings more than eight years of experience working in community development across several communities, both here in Vancouver and abroad. She joins us after having had worked at two provincial MLA's Community offices, including West End MLA Spencer Chandra Herbert. Chantille has also worked as an Evaluation Officer and Programme Manager for the United Nations. She lives in the West End and is currently a member of the steering committee of GNH's Young Ideas Initiative. Please join us in welcoming Chantille and her son Sebastian to the GNH family. #TogetherWeGrow

This year celebrates the 30th year that Gordon Neighbourhood House has operated out of 1019 Broughton Street. It was an exciting time for West End residents, because since our opening in 1942 GNH operated out various West End locations. It was especially exciting as HRH Prince Charles joined in for the opening festivities. Also in the photo (fourth from the right) is then CEO of the Association of Neighbourhood Houses (and former Executive Director of Gordon Neighbourhood House) Elmer Helm.
