Health Mentors Cohort 5 begins!
On September 28th, 200 students and 50 mentors gathered at Creekside Community Centre for the start of the Interprofessional Health Mentors program. This is the 5th group of students to take part in the program since it began in 2011.
The students will spend the next 16 months working in self-directed learning communities, learning with and from students from different health professional programs and their Health Mentor who is an expert in living with and managing chronic disease or disability.
Patient & Community Voices Go East
At the end of September, Angela Towle and Bill Godolphin were in Virginia, USA, to spread the word about their work at UBC at the Collaborating Across Borders (CAB) conference in Roanoke, and at a satellite meeting of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality in Crystal City.
The symposium presenters have collaborated to write a chapter on partnering with patients for a book ‘Leading research and evaluation in interprofessional education and collaborative practice’. Read more...
Evidence shows that good communication with health professionals results in better health outcomes, yet many people report difficulties with that communication.
Angela and Bill developed the workshop several years ago and have disseminated it through various organizations, aiming to help people in the community practice key communication skills that have been shown to make a difference: presenting information, asking questions, checking understanding and expressing concerns.
Health Advocacy training for geriatric and family practice residents
On October 7th, ten geriatric and family practice residents took part in a workshop on health advocacy co-created and delivered in collaboration with community-based organizations that support seniors.
The workshop was developed as part of a project funded by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada to develop health advocacy training resources for medical residents.
A variation of the workshop for pediatric residents is under development in collaboration with the Rare Diseases Foundation and will be available soon!

On Saturday, November 14th, be part of The Vancouver Declaration! Conference delegates will gather to develop a consensus on the major developments and challenges in patient involvement in health professional education, and propose policy recommendations targeted at stakeholders e.g. academic institutions, community agencies, national bodies, government, funders.
