Giving Tuesday honors generosity and giving

Most people have heard about Black Friday and Cyber Monday, two days during the holiday season geared toward consumerism. But have you heard about Giving Tuesday (also listed as #GivingTuesday)?

Giving Tuesday is Dec. 1 this year, and it's a day set aside to honor generosity and the contributions made to the community by local nonprofits. This year, the Sitka Local Foods Network is joining the Giving Tuesday movement and launching a fundraiser.

You can learn more about the fundraiser by clicking this link, and you can donate using our secure online site for Giving Tuesday. Your support helps us meet our mission of increasing the amount of locally produced and harvested foods in the diets of Southeast Alaskans. We appreciate your contributions to Sitka's food security.

SLFN honored in Good Food Org Guide 2015

For the second straight year, the Sitka Local Foods Network has been honored in the Good Food Org Guide compiled by the James Beard Foundation & Food Tank.

This is the second year the Good Food Org Guide has been published, and the Sitka Local Foods Network is one of nine organizations from Alaska listed in the international directory of groups working to improve their food systems. Last year there were five Alaska organizations listed. Click this link to learn more about the project.

Sitka Local Foods Network seeks board members

The Sitka Local Foods Network is recruiting new board members  and volunteers for 2015-16. This will be a year of transition for us, as a couple of long-time board members are retiring, so we're looking for new people who want to help us promote local foods in Sitka.

The Sitka Local Foods Network usually meets once a month, except during the summer when everybody is busy growing and selling food. Our board members also serve on committees that help manage the Sitka Farmers Market, the St. Peter's Fellowship Farm communal garden, and our education program. We also have board members who work on our finance and fundraising committees.

Garden mentor program recruiting new families for 2015-16

The Sitka Local Foods Network education committee is still recruiting new families for the 2015-16 garden mentoring program. The program is for first-time gardeners who need coaching on how to grow their own food in Sitka.

Those families who join the program will learn how to grow lettuce, kale, rhubarb and potatoes during their first year in the program. There also is an option for a second year, when the families learn how to grow carrots, green onions, chard and peas, which are a little bit more difficult to grow in Sitka. We hope to add up to three new families each year. To learn more about how to apply, click this link.
