Buying a Hearing Aid
I don't hear well. What should I do and what can I expect? Where do I purchase hearing aids, and what are the costs and styles of hearing aids?
First, visit a physician who can refer you to an otolaryngologist (an ear, nose and throat specialist), because many hearing problems can be corrected medically. If you have ear pain, drainage, excess earwax, hearing loss in only one ear, sudden or rapidly progressive hearing loss, or dizziness, it is especially important that you see an otolaryngologist, as these may be symptoms indicating a serious medical problem. After your exam, the otolaryngologist will help you obtain a hearing assessment from an audiologist. A screening test from a hearing aid dealer may not be adequate. Our otolaryngologists have an audiologist in their office to assess your ability to hear pure tone sounds and to understand words. The results of these tests will indicate the degree of hearing loss, the type of loss (conductive or sensorineural) and other medical information about your ears and health.

SPOTLIGHT on Mandy!
This month’s Hearing Notes Spotlight is on Amanda Nordgren, an awesome audiologist here at Midwest Ear, Nose & Throat Hearing Center! We are going one on one with Mandy to get to know her better!
Mandy grew up in Northern Minnesota on a lake with her mom, dad and older sister, Megan. Growing up, she liked to go out on the boat, swim, fish, and camp. From there, she went on to get her B.A.S. in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Minnesota Duluth and her Doctor of Audiology Degree from Western Michigan University. Mandy came to Sioux Falls after she finished Grad School in Michigan because she wanted to be closer to her family in Minnesota.
Mandy likes to read and have movie marathon afternoons on the weekends. She has a four year old cat named Lola that likes to quack like a duck and play fetch like a dog! She’s also a big fan of the Minnesota Twins and likes to go to several games every summer! One of her favorite places to visit is the North Shore in Minnesota. “I love starting in Duluth and working my way up to Grand Marais. It’s fun to stop at all the State Parks along the way and eat at Betty’s Pies and Sven and Ole’s Pizza,†she said.
She decided to be an audiologist because she had a lot of problems with hearing and ear infections as a child. “My audiologist was actually the mom of one of my friends growing up. I remember how cool I thought her job was,†said Mandy. Her favorite part of working with hearing aid patients is listening to people say how much better they can hear with their hearing aids. “They tell stories of sounds around the house they couldn’t hear before or how much better they were able to hear at social gatherings.â€
