Jazz Ambassadors to present big band, swing and more

The internationally acclaimed Jazz Ambassadors of Washington, D.C. will continue its long tradition of presenting free public performances when they appear Nov. 14, 7:30 p.m. at Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center auditorium. 
Though the concert is free, tickets are required. Please contact Jackie Bryant in the Fine Arts office at ext. 5408 or email jsbryant@swu.edu.
SWU Wind Ensemble/Jazz Ensemble Concert
SWU’s Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble will combine for a program Tuesday featuring the newest music published for concert band and jazz ensemble.
The concert, which starts at 7:30 in the auditorium of Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center, will feature student and guest conductors and a range of music from on various skill levels. This concert will be fun, quick and informational to our local educators and students. The ensembles are directed by Greg Day, professor of music at Southern Wesleyan. For details, call ext. 5408.

Traditional Enrollment Progress

President Todd Voss reports that SWU's traditional program enrollment is showing encouraging signs of growth! As promised in the all campus meeting Oct. 30, here are the graphs of some encouraging trends to note. With the college attendance needle moving in the positive direction and demographic shift to the South in our favor, we have much to be thankful for and much to anticipate in the years ahead!

P.B. Wood Tournament

Morning rain didn't stop area golfers from coming out to Pickens Country Club for the annual P.B. Wood Golf Tournament this past Friday. The tournament, named for Paul Baker Wood, professor emeritus, supports SWU's Promise Fund. 

Personnel Announcements

 With the recent appointment of Melissa Browning as director for SWU’s new student support services program, searches are now complete and staff members have been hired! This program provides tutoring, accountability, financial and career workshops as well as mentoring, advising and events to enhance cultural awareness for students who are first-generation college students, have disabilities and/or come from low-income backgrounds. It is funded by a 5-year federal grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Please join us in welcoming these staff to this new department!

James Smyrl started Nov. 2 as advisor for student support services. Smyrl received his BS in Christian ministry from SWU (1993), completed his master’s in communication and Ph.D. (concentration in communication) from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (Wake Forest).  

Stephanie Rodriguez is transitioning as admissions counselor for our traditional program to advisor with student support services on Nov. 16. Rodriguez is a SWU alum (2007) and received her BA in biology. She completed her master’s of public health from Liberty University in 2014. She has worked with our traditional admissions program since 2008, has served as an assistant coach in SWU’s athletics program, and as an adjunct professor.

Sharde Young begins Nov. 9 as secretary for student support services. She completed her BA in sociology at Clemson University, her master’s in social work at University of South Carolina and is pursuing her master’s in public administration at University of Arkansas. Previously, Sharde has worked in Clemson Elementary School’s afterschool program, and as a human services specialist for the South Carolina Department of Social Services.

Debbie Guhr begins employment Nov. 9 as part-time secretary for faculty services. She completed her BSBA at SWU (1988) and worked as a teacher’s assistant at Oconee Christian Academy and Northside Elementary (Seneca). She has also served as bookkeeper for the South Carolina District of The Wesleyan Church. Most recently, Guhr worked in a part-time, temporary position in SWU’s alumni office leading up to Homecoming. We are glad she will continue on in support of our faculty and students on the main campus.

Congratulations!

Kayla Fritts was born to Phillip and Mandi Bedell Fritts Nov. 4 at 6:30 a.m., at 7 lbs. 11 oz. and 20 inches. Phillip is a 2009 media communication graduate and Mandi is a 2011 human services graduate.
Dr. Chuck Mealy, pictured here with Dr. Lisa McWherter, vice president for advancement, received the Outstanding Volunteer Service Award during the Donor Appreciation Banquet Oct. 28 at Central. Mealy currently serves as director for volunteer services for the Advancement Office. 

Norton involved in military outreach

Jason Norton, regional director – North Augusta, attended the Southeastern Council on Military Education (SECOME) meeting during late October in Wrightsville Beach, N.C. He serves on their board of directors, representing South Carolina. Their mission is “to promote, support and deliver quality educational and professional opportunities and practices within all branches of the Armed Forces by providing innovative and ethical provisions for higher educational institutions, government and state entities.”

Veterans Day Chapel

SWU is privileged to have Chaplain Taylor Kim as Veterans Day Chapel speaker. Born in the Republic of Korea and the son of a Marine, Kim is ordained and endorsed by The Wesleyan Church and has devoted many years to military service. Click here for his bio.

Bryant to address Women in Business

Joy Bryant, executive director of alumni and constituent relations at SWU, will be the speaker for the next Women In Business meeting Nov. 17, 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Central-Clemson branch of Pickens County Library. Dr. Ken Myers is planning to lead a study abroad trip to Greece in the spring. This is a fantastic opportunity to visit an exciting place full of history, culture and adventure. Health Survey

The Pickens County Health Coalition has developed a survey to get opinions about health problems in the community. The results will be used to identify issues we can address through community action. If you are a Pickens County resident, please click on this link to take the survey. It will only take about 10 minutes and your input is very valuable to us. The survey will be available until Nov. 10, but please don't wait, do it now! Thanks for your participation in advance!

Blood Drive

We had a great turnout at last week's Blood Drive. Donations exceeded the 36 unit goal, reaching 40 units! There were also 18 first-time donors! The next Blood Drive will take place Jan. 19 on the Central campus.

Bryant Continues Career with ABA's Greenville Galaxy

Former SWU men's basketball player Dwyane Bryant will continue his playing career in 2015-16 as part of the American Basketball Association's Greenville Galaxy. Bryant played at Middle Georgia Tech for two years before transferring to SWU for his final two seasons. Bryant averaged nine points and 8.2 rebounds in 2014-15, his senior season, and led the conference in field goal percentage. The native of Brunswick, Ga. will graduate in May. Read more>>

From the Health Center

Flu shots are available by appointment through the Health Center. The cost is $25. We will be able to file on your insurance this year through Baptist Easley or you can pay with cash or check. If you are interested, please contact Nurse Herron at ext. 5134 or Debbie Eller deller@swu.edu or ext. 5131 for an appointment. 
Nurse Practitioner Jessica Rivera is in the Health Center on Monday and Thursday mornings. She will see patients by appointment 8:15 – 11:30 a.m. Appointments can be scheduled by contacting Debbie Eller at ext. 5131 or Nurse Lori Herron at extension 5134. Services are for both minor urgent care issues and preventative/primary care including physicals and management of chronic medical issues. 

Rivera is also available to do sports physicals for employee’s children. Just call for an appointment.

The services provided by the Nurse Practitioner from Baptist Easley will be billed to insurance. All billing will be handled by Baptist Easley Hospital. 

Dr. Beacham will continue to be on campus but his services will only be for students. If you have additional questions please direct those to Nurse Herron.
