I am often asked “when is the best time to go Klosters?” and the temptation is always to answer “any time!”. However, there do seem to be certain times which seem consistently better than others depending on your perspective. For many years I was a big fan of late February or early March. The snow is still really good then having had all winter to fall and the mountains are close to being at their best. The pistes are fairly empty and with the days getting longer, and generally warmer too, the fantastic skiing can be punctuated by delicious lunches on sunny terraces.
Now that children have entered the equation the family holiday has to be in one of the school holiday periods. We always erred towards the first two weeks of the Easter holidays. There has always been plenty of snow then and with the runs back to the village being north facing, skiing back to the bottom is usually fine until about 8-10 April. The slopes tend to be pretty empty too and the children certainly love that warmer weather. Half term is also good and there is a real buzz around the village, although be mindful of the flights as they can get quite expensive.
Christmas and New Year is a lovely time for a family holiday to the Alps and for Klosters this is the best time if you want a bit of a party. The bars and night club are full and the village certainly gets into the festive spirit with fireworks at midnight on New Year’s Eve and piglet racing on New Year’s day.
For those who want to focus on their skiing, and particularly off piste, then the quality of the snow is hard to beat in January. The mountain tends to be fairly empty (spot the recurring theme! You often get the place to yourself!). Unsurprisingly there is a distinct wintery feel and there is more of a chill in the air, but the skiing is fantastic and you can always warm up in one the many cosy wooden restaurants that adorn the mountain.
My recent discovery is pre Christmas. It is wonderful to get the skis back on and put in the first turns of winter. With Klosters being in a good catchment area for snow and with an abundance of snow canons many of the pistes and lifts are up and running by mid December. The slopes are even quieter than normal and with a few bargains to be had such as free ski passes then this is a great time to blow away the cobwebs and get back into the skiing groove.
