Register Now for the Safe Routes to School Regional Network Meeting! 

Join us this Thursday, November 5, 2015 to talk about all things Safe Routes to School in the Greater Washington, DC region! Registration is open and available here. ***Please register if you plan to attend so we have an accurate number of attendees***


We are pleased to announce an exciting lineup of speakers to cover a wide range of issues, from Washington D.C.'s exciting new universal bicycle education program, to regional funding opportunities, equity and public health initiatives, data collection, and much more! Agenda:

8:30-9:00: Registration and Coffee
9:00-9:10: Welcome and Introductions. 
9:10-9:40: Miriam Kenyon, District of Columbia Public Schools. Miriam will be sharing her exciting new effort to bring universal bicycle education to all second grade students at District of Columbia Public Schools. This program is the first of its kind in the United States, and is quickly being adopted by cities around the country. 
9:40-10:00: Chris Bryant, Street Wize Foundation. The Street Wize Foundation focuses on the critical goal of creating communities in the Washington, D.C. region, where health, fitness and safety are central pillars of childhood. As the Executive Director of the Street Wize Foundation, Chris will share the organization's successes in the region as a model of community transformation. 
10:00-10:10: Break
10:10-11:00: MWCOG Presentations. Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments staff Michael Farrell and Lamont Cobb will present on a number of key initiatives being undertaken by MWCOG to improve Safe Routes to School in the Greater Washington, D.C. region. Their presentation will include updates on programs, funding opportunities, and exciting new school travel data, including:

  • School travel data from the Household Travel Survey
  • Street Smart Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Campaign
  • Transportation-Land use Connections Program
  • Transportation Alternatives Program


11:00-11:45: Safe Routes to School Coordinator Panel. As a region, we are very lucky to have dedicated coordinators working directly with our school districts and planning departments to help facilitate the 6 E's of Safe Routes to School. Coordinators from Montgomery, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William Counties will provide regional updates on the work they are doing to strengthen Safe Routes to School throughout our region, and provide time for questions and answers with the audience. 
11:45-12:10: Networking and Lunch. Self serve lunch before our lunchtime presentation.
12:10-12:50: Lunch Presentation. We are excited to have Diane Lambert and Wendy Phelps of Toole Design Group provide a lunchtime presentation on shared perspectives for Safe Routes to School and safety. Toole Design Group is the nation's leading planning, engineering, and landscape architecture firm specializing in multimodal transportation, and has helped facilitate Safe Routes to School projects across the country.
