Sophomore David J. Del Grande has won the University of Arizona School of Journalism's prestigious Don Bolles Fellowship for spring 2016.
Del Grande, an apprentice reporter at the Arizona Daily Star focusing on local government, will spend next semester in Phoenix covering the state Legislature.
The fellowship is named for Bolles, the Arizona Republic reporter killed in 1976 while investigating organized crime.
"I can't believe I won," Del Grande said.
The journalism major has already had multiple stories published on A1 in the Star, including pieces on the Sun Tran bus strike and vacant TUSD school sites.
He is a transfer student from Pima Community College, where he was news editor for the Aztec Press and won an Arizona Press Club award in community education reporting in 2014.
Del Grande, a graduate of Paramus High School in northern New Jersey, is vice president of the UA chapter of Society of Professional Journalists.
He also has written freelance entertainment stories for the Tucson Weekly, including on Tucson's hip-hop community.
