THE SHOULDER SEASON

Late fall, a time for big fish and solitude. I find it funny that some of the best times of the year are often the quietest on our streams. If you follow our shop regularly you know I have plugged these "shoulder seasons" as some great fishing times for those willing to deal with a little more adverse conditions. No longer has your favorite water been fished by numerous anglers, you can have your pick of any run and often times the bigger fish are willing to eat. Their food supply and metabolism will soon be slowing down, so fishing deeper and slower may be on the menu more than dry flies.

A few of my fishing buddies say this is when their fishing season is just starting... I would echo that and follow it up with the question, "When did it ever stop?"

INTRO TO FISHING SOFT HACKLES  - VIDEO

Soft hackles flies and techniques have been around for quite some time. They are often some of the simplest styles of flies and the techniques used to fish them are really pretty straight forward. Despite being over shadowed by many of today's more modern flies, soft hackles are really excellent patterns for fishing caddis / mayfly emergences. They can also really be productive in situations when you have fickle, or heavily pressured fish feeding near the surface. READ MORE

CLOSEOUT ITEMS

WINSTON BORON IIIX RODS -
The ever popular Boron IIIx rods are seeing a small upgrade for 2016 and will be featuring a new guide set. The new guides are supposed to reduce friction which will improve line speed and allow the angler to shoot further. That being said, all of our current inventory is being blown out at an unprecedented 40% off!! Rods that normally retail for $795-810 are now on CLOSEOUT for $477-486. We have a range of Boron IIIx rods including:
  • 486-4  The ultimate dry fly stick. Light and smooth with accuracy. Perfect rod for upper NF CDA / St. Joe
  • 490-4  A great dry fly rod with a little more junk in the trunk for chucking some meatier flies. Great all around 4wt
  • 590-4  A 5wt rod with some feel. Perfectly at home on small or larger rivers. Covers a wide range of conditions.
  • 690-4  A go anywhere, do anything rod. Can still throw some small flies and lots of power for streamers.
  • 696-4  Hands down our guide staffs favorite nymphing rod. All of us own this rod for nymphing.
  • 796-4  Perfect for steelhead rivers like Grande Ronde, Methow, or Deschutes. Excellent nymphing rod.
  • 890-4  The utility rod... from steelhead to saltwater and every piece of big water in-between.
  • 896-4  Like the 796-4 just with a bit more power. Can handle GR / Methow perfectly and works great on CW/Snake.
SIMMS PACKS -
All the Simms Headwater series packs are getting a facelift for next season. Why? Good question, we love the current season of packs. However, we need to make room for all the new stuff so this years line up has to go. 40% off what we have in-stock.

SCIENTIFIC ANGLERS GPX LINE -
This iconic line has stood the test of time. Such a great all around line for many different road actions. Despite this line being a half weight heavier, it really works well with many rod actions and casting styles. A great line for everything from dry/dropper rigs to streamers and not too clunky for throwing some small dries either. Love this line. Luckily it will be continued in the Sharkwave Series. The new line (MPX Taper) replacing this seems to be a winner so far from what we can tell. Currently we have GPX lines from 3wt - 9wt.
