Caldicott Guardian Q&A

Timely & appropriate information sharing between agencies is vital to safeguarding vulnerable adults and children. All professionals should be supported to have a clear understanding of what information can be shared within the relevant legal frameworks, including how to obtain consent to share. We’ve seen from local case reviews that information sharing is still an area of challenge for our professionals.

A Caldicott Guardian is a senior person responsible for protecting the confidentiality of patient and service-user information and enabling appropriate information-sharing. This Q&A session will allow you to direct questions to some of the city’s Caldicott Guardians about best practice in sharing information and their role to actively support and enable good information sharing. Led by:

Soline Jerram, Brighton & Hove Clinical Commissioning Group
Pinaki Ghoshal,   Brighton & Hove Children’s Services
Denise D’Souza, Brighton & Hove City Council’s Adult Services

An Introduction to Modern Slavery

In 2014 the Home Office estimated that there were between 10,000 - 13,000 potential victims of modern slavery in the UK. This trade in human misery is taking place in cities, towns and rural communities across the nation on a shameful scale. Sexual exploitation is the most common form of modern slavery currently reported by potential victims in the UK, followed by labour exploitation, forced criminal exploitation and domestic servitude. Victims can be adults or children.

Victims of modern slavery are isolated and fearful and there are many reasons why reporting rates are low. Only a few cases have come to light in Brighton & Hove but we believe that the city is affected by this global phenomenon. This awareness-raising session will explain what Modern Slavery is and equip you with knowledge of the signs and indicators to look out for.

Topics covered include:

  • Definitions of key terms and an introduction to the Modern Slavery Act 2015.
  • Common signs and indicators that might indicate that someone is a victim
  • Reporting your concerns about an adult or a child.
  • The National Referral Mechanism for victims.
