A £10 million scheme has today been launched to boost literacy for 10,000 pupils in primary schools across the region.
The initiative, run by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) and Northern Rock Foundation, will test the most effective ways of helping pupils learn to read and write well over a five-year period. Although the project is open to all 880 primary schools in the North East, it is said it will focus mainly on children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Levels of success: the potential of UK apprenticeships, by Dr Philip Kirby for the Sutton Trust, found that the best apprentices (those with a level 5 qualification) will earn significantly more in their lifetime than a graduate from a university outside of the Russell Group. Te report warns that, in the current system, too many apprenticeships are set only at GCSE standard and fail to offer great value beyond traditional work places.

A survey of more than 2,300 respondents conducted by the National Literacy Trust found that over 95% of teaching staff across subject areas said it is their job to teach and promote literacy. However, many experienced teachers don't feel equipped with the skills and knowledge to effectively deliver this, with more than half saying they feel a lack of knowledge is a barrier, and 23.9% say they don't feel confident teaching the literacy set out in the new National Curriculum.
