November 2015

November! How did that happen so quickly?

I hope those of you who attended our trip to Wicked enjoyed the show and thank you for braving the DLR strike and making your way across London! Once again the very lovely Afua has written a short review I would like to share with you.

We have a busy newsletter this month so be sure to check out all the opportunities available.

Adriana Manzo-Andrade @ Brownfield Cabin

How did you get involved at the Cabin?
I started attending classes at the Cabin at the start of the year, generally fitness classes, I'm Mexican and absolutely love all the music in Zumba. As I got to know Jayne she encouraged me to get more involved, I've always loved crafting since I was a little girl and so joined in with the 'knit n knatter' group every Tuesday. I've been volunteering at the Cabin since March and enjoy bring new crafts to the knitting group for them to try, I used to be a teacher and this is a good step for me to try and get back into teaching.

What keeps you coming back?
To begin with I actually felt a little isolated, I live a short 10 minute walk away but didn't really have any friends in the immediate area. Jayne is so welcoming and has helped me to raise my confidence enormously, it feels good to be useful, to give something back and I love working with people. I feel part of the community now rather than just a stay at home mum.

What can we find you doing when you're not at the Cabin?
I have four children aged 10 and under so most of my time is spent raising my family but I still attend Zumba classes which are now led at the Teviott Centre.

We asked Jayne from the Cabin to give us three words which best describe Adriana

"Blimey only 3! Talented, inspiring, warm and if you wanted a 4th I’d say empathetic."

Wicked…A review
I smiled in satisfaction as the brilliant actors took turns to bow on the brightly lit stage; the musical was indeed “wicked”! A wonderful twist of the tale of ‘The Wizard of Oz’, portraying the ‘untold’ stories of the witches of the Land of Oz.

Ever thought about what happened before Dorothy, the tin man, scarecrow and lion ended up together? Well, Wicked tells it all. Long before they got on the scene, the two witches, Elphaba (the wicked witch) and Glinda (the good witch) had the spotlight.

With her peculiar green skin and appearance, Elphaba, was a social misfit in the town. She makes friends with Glinda (her roommate), who coaches her through how to act like a lady to attract attention.

As the years pass by, Elphaba is summoned by the infamous Wizard of Oz to prove herself worthy of becoming a witch. A twist of fate pushes her to defy the orders of the wizard and she flees from the beautiful Emerald city.

Glinda’s love interest, Fiyero, falls in love with Elphaba, and elopes with her. Their time together was short lived, as he is captured for relegating his duties as a guard. Elphaba manages to save his life after casting a spell. He comes out alive, but as a scarecrow.

The Wizard of Oz uses Elphaba’s sister as bait to bring her back to the Emerald city, so she can be caught. Elphaba however fools everyone by faking her death. She escapes with Fiyero, now turned scarecrow.

Glinda, on the other hand, becomes ruler after the Wizard of Oz is sent to prison after his cunning deeds are let out of the bag.

Definitely a happy ending from my perspective! Would I watch it again? Absolutely yes!
