chieftain’s message

I’m looking forward to representing the Society at the Service of Remembrance at Kranji War Cemetery on Sunday. It is always a moving ceremony and I will be happy to see some of our members there paying their respects to those who gave their lives. Coffee and tea is served afterwards along with a guided tour.

We are building on our charity efforts and held a popular poppy  coffee morning, with proceeds going to the British Poppy Appeal. We have also been selling poppies at our ball dance practices.

The dance practices has been going well, with lots of folk coming along and having a go, which is what it’s all about. It will be good to see people trying out their very funky dance moves on the dance floor on the night of the St Andrew’s Ball. (Some more funky than others!)

Please make sure to get up and try the dances even if you don’t know them. We Scots are world famous for our welcome and friendliness, so you’re bound to find an eager dance partner for every dance! Fancy footwork is appreciated but not necessary.

All systems go at the moment for the ball sub-committee. I have come to the conclusion the ball is like a mini Edinburgh Tattoo; it takes lots of organisation to make sure it all goes smoothly on the night. Over 350 of you glam lassies and handsome laddies will be coming along.

You can look forward to a six course dinner, the Neil Barron Band flown from Scotland, Scottish country dancing, meeting the new British High Commissioner and hearing from the Director of the Ghurka Trust followed by a wee dram or two of The Famous Grouse Whisky, along with free flow bubbles and wine... let's see who's still dancing at 3:30am when carriages (or uber cars) depart. There is still time to buy your ticket, but hurry!

Please come and say hello to me at the ball, and make sure to bring me a drink as I’ll need it as I’ll be the nervous blonde one with the tartan dress wearing the Chieftain’s medal...

As always, your support is truly appreciated and it’s been lovely catching up with everyone during the last few events, most especially the hugely successful sell-out Whisky Kiss Ceilidh!!

Now let’s get ready and look forward to the highlight of the year, come and celebrate your Scottish-ness and let’s hae a rip auld time of it!!

SRT is proud to have co-commissioned Peter Brook's new play, Battlefield, which will premiere at the Theatre des Bouffes du Nord in Paris in September, and have its international premiere in Singapore, before it tours the world.

Peter Brook is to return to one of his most celebrated productions with a new play drawing on a section of the ancient Sanskrit epic the Mahabharata.

The director’s nine-hour production of the Mahabharata 30 years ago has gone down in theatre history as one of the greatest. He has returned to the 3,000-year-old text for a new play called Battlefield - only one hour and an half long! - which draws on one section in which the Bharata family is torn apart by war and trying to make sense of the horrors they have experienced – and perpetrated.

There are three showings available to SSAS members
