Act Belong Commit

Schools Video Competition

Throughout Term 3, our Mentally Healthy High Schools have been working in the classroom to create an advertisement encouraging young people to Act-Belong-Commit. There were 8 schools registered in the competition with over 40 video entries from students in classes such as drama, media and health studies.

It was fantastic to see how well the students understood the Act-Belong-Commit me
ssage and what mental health means to them.  We have some very talented young people in WA!

The winner was ‘Happily Ever After’ by Khiara Daw from Great Southern Grammar.

Mental Health Week 2015- it's a wrap!

Mental Health Week is o
ver for another year!

Thank you to the WA Association for Mental Health for embracing Act-Belong-Commit as the official theme for Mental Health Week in WA this year and to everyone else who helped the week reach new heights in 2015.

There were many highlights of the week, but in particular it was amazing to see the spread of mental health awareness across WA. The Mentally Healthy WA team noticed a willing openness from the general public when speaking about mental health, which demonstrates how far we have come in destigmatising mental health over the past few years.

You can read the f
ull wrap-up here.

October Act-Belong-Commit Local Champion – Andrew Markovs from Albany

Andrew is a mental health advocate who is passionate about using his lived experience of mental illness to create change in his local community. After being diagnosed with bipolar disorder 14 years ago, Andrew realised that while there was no ‘cure’ for his condition, it didn’t mean that he couldn’t live a mentally healthy and fulfilled life.

“My gradual acknowledgement of this gift of being different led me to get involved with hands-on preventative mental health” said Andrew.

“I started up a local support group, became a committee and board member of lived experience advisory groups for UWA and the Mental Health Commission and became an accredited Mental Health First Aid instructor.”

Andrew found that by making the simple steps of joining local yoga, music and maritime history groups – he enjoyed a valuable sense of belonging, leading him to rediscover his ability to laugh, love and engage with other people.
