Festival Fever took over this month at Ramingining and Milingimbi communities. Both communities celebrated their festivals with the support of ALPA and our benevolent fund as main sponsors. Over two action packed weeks, the communities pulled together to create memorable events. It was great to see the amazing talent in these communities and other communities in the region. During the month we also received an innovation award for our Plastic Fantastic 3D printing program. ALPA heard the fantastic news that we are one of three finalists in the Australian Training Awards as Employer of the Year. This issue also looks at some of the great grass roots programs that are driven by our staff.

Gatjirrk Milingimbi Festival
Over four nights, the Milingimbi festival showcased some great local bands and dancing talent. The festival also hosted as well as staging the local premiere of the film "Wurray," directed by Keith Lapulung. View Photo Gallery
Phil Evans from the Jimmy Little Foundation ran the co-ordination, sound and lighting for the festival and did an outstanding job with the assistance of some local yolngu. This year the festival also honoured the passing of Dr.Gumbula who was a key driver of the yolngu music scene with bands such as Soft Sands and Black Wizard in the past. Soft Sands played, and Barra from Birritjimi community put on a great performance. Other bands playing included Wirringa Band, New Generation band, Djambang band and My Boys are Good Boys. Dance groups also competed for prize money and showed some great talent. This festival was funded by ALPA and the ALPA benevolent fund, with additional funding from the East Arnhem Regional Council. Plastic Fantastic Project Wins Environmental Innovation award
ALPA was won an Innovation award at the Keep Australia Beautiful Tidy Towns awards in Katherine for work on our highly innovative Plastic Fantastic project. View Video
ALPA CDP at Milingimbi is working on recycling plastic bottles and turning them into 3D printed objects. Local Yolngu RSAS (Remote School Attendance Strategy) staff have been learning to design and print 3D objects and have been supporting kids to learn as well. Participation in the program is a reward for children who have achieved high levels of attendance at school. This project is the first of it's kind in Australia. Well done team ALPA! This is a great achievement for a project that has really only just started!

ALPA Finalist in Australian Training Awards Employer of the Year award
Following on from ALPA's win at the NT Training Awards 2015 as Employer of the Year, we are proud to announce that ALPA has been chosen as one of three national finalists and will be going to Hobart on the 18th and 19th November to compete in the national awards.
Last year’s winner was Westpac, and this year’s finalists in the Australian Employer of the Year category are ALPA, McDonalds Australia (who won in Victoria) and Crown Casinos and Resorts (who won in WA).
This is a great achievement for ALPA and even though we are up against two of the nations largest corporations, we will be trying our absolute best to win! This is great recognition and validation for the ALPA indigenous business development model and a great achievement for indigenous business in general. Well done team ALPA and let's bring home the "big one" for Yolngu and for the NT!

Discounts to promote eating fruit
This month ALPA member stores are running a promotion offering discounts on Mangoes ($6.99KG), Peaches ($13.99KG) and Nectarines ($13.99KG). This is in an effort to promote healthy eating of fruit. Promoting healthy alternatives on Badu
As part of their Cert III training in retail on Badu island in the Torres Strait, Island & Cape staff Lily and Ada created an in-store promotion. They chose to promote Diet Rite low sugar cordial and fruit smoothies and offer free samples of healthy alternatives to the local islanders. Lily and Ada had great fun explaining the benefits of low sugar cordial and fruit to customers.

Bak'bididi Ramingining Festival
The Bak'bididi festival at Ramingining is a central focus of the communities year, and brought together a fantastic array of local dancers and bands over two nights. View Photo Gallery
Aboriginal Resource Development Services (ARDS) did a great job organising the festival and ran the sound and lighting for the concert with assistance of some local yolngu workers. The concert feaured Barra band from Birritjimi, with a large number of other bands including Black Iron, Doorbell Gospel Band, Dhunganda Street Sounds, KK Band, Martin Gaykamangu, Stanley Gaykamangu, and New Generation Band. A large number of local dance groups also showed how Ramingining can bust a move. This festival was funded by ALPA and the ALPA benevolent fund, with additional funding from the East Arnhem Regional Council. Island and Cape Staff celebrated at Torres Strait Employment and Training Recognition Awards
Three Island and Cape staff were finalists in the Torres Strait Employment and Training Recognition awards held on 8 October at Thursday Island.
Nazareth (Naz) Naawi was competing for the Inspirational Trainee award, Erstelita (Steph) Bowie was competing for the Inspirational Employee award, and Kirsty Slattery was competing for the Inspirational Trainer award. Although they didn't take home any awards, it was a great opportunity to celebrate some of our amazing staff. Erstelita (Steph) Bowie also created history in the last month by becoming the first Badu islander to graduate with a Certificate III in Retail through our internal staff training. Nazareth (Naz) Naawi also paved the way for Masig island, becoming the first resident there to also obtain a Certificate III in Retail. Nine other trainees in the Island & Cape stores are working towards their Cert II in Retail Operations.

Anzacs and Damper in Milingimbi
As part of the womens ALPA CDP program Keeping Culture Strong at Milingimbi, a group of women cooked Anzac biscuits and damper which were fed to the other CDP participants. This was the first time the women had cooked Anzac biscuits and this helped provide training for work in food preparation.
Over seven dozen biscuits were made in the Rulku lodge kitchen. This food preparation skills development is planned to be progressed further in the new year, with a new commercial training kitchen to be purpose built for Milingimbi.

Peter is a supervisor at our Gapuwiyak store who has been working for ALPA for over 11 years. He enjoys his work as a supervisor and sees himself as a role model for the community. He hopes for his children and relatives to be working in the store long into the future after he has passed away. View Video
