Transitional Housing Project Update!

The fence is done!  We are thankful to the Des Moines First Unitarian Church for helping us build a fence and securing our house.  They have provided $2,782.12 in funds and volunteer hours of more than 500 hours.  We are extremely grateful to Jon MacAllister who headed the project.  Thank you so much Jon MacAllister!

We are now in the process of renovating the house.  The front rooms are painted.  The bathroom will be fully renovated with new tiles and shower.  The kitchen and the backroom will be renovated.   New stairs for the basement and new furnace will be installed by mid-November.

If you are interested in volunteering your time or would like to donate money for the renovation, contact Mira Yusef at mirayusef@muawi.org or call 515.288.0881 extension 201.

IowaARCh

Monsoon’s statewide chat services have a name, logo, and social media presence!

IowaARCh (Affirmation & Resources Chat), like a physical arch, will offer safety and support for survivors across Iowa. We are now on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, & Instagram. Please follow us on these social media sites for updates! We are also working with the talented designers at DesignAction Collective to create a website that will host the service.

We are always looking for outreach opportunities, so please contact Alex (alexandranassif@muawi.org) if you would like her to send outreach materials to or visit your group or event.

Finally, we are still seeking youth advocates! (Flyer can be viewed here.) Please contact Mira & Alex if you or a young person you know is interested in this position.

Iowa City Office

During the month of October, our staff member Keeli hosted two Mandarin Yoni Chat discussion groups. In the first meeting, the group talked about healthy v.s. unhealthy relationships within Chinese international students population; in the second meeting, Keeli showed the participants a movie called Sita Sings the Blues and discussed women's roles in traditional South Asian history.

On October 4th, Fatima, Keeli, Lata, and Mira tabled in the University of Iowa's Celebrating Cultural Diversity Festival. We enjoyed meeting new and old friends during that event, and had a great time trying different kinds of food!

On October 26th, Fatima co-facilitated with DVIP and WRAC for a DV awareness event called Relationship Remix: Happy, Healthy Hook-ups. During that event, they used different activities to help UI students learn about healthy relationships.

Des Moines Office

In October, Del Phi and Soe Moe, our Des Moines-based staff members, hosted two outreach events for the Karen community where they had open discussions on various legal and cultural topics, as well as domestic violence and sexual assault issues.

One of the events called "Get to Know Your Family" was organized to highlight domestic violence awareness month.  The group had activities and discussions on healthy family relationship. Del Phi and Soe Moe also offered to help translate documents for the community members and fill out forms on their behalves.
We are still hiring!

We are hiring chat advocates for the Statewide Chatline Services! We are looking for one chat advocate who will work 9am to 2pm and 4-6 youth chat advocates who will work with shifts from 3pm to 9pm, Monday to Friday.  We will also have weekend shifts.
