Why are you thankful for your family?
 

Most of us, whatever our age or position in life, still rely on our family. They give us roots. They give us a sense of security and belonging. Family represents acceptance. Someone to count on. Unconditional love. 

For those of us blessed with strong families, it is sometimes hard to imagine what living without one means. 

But a striking commonality between every single parent in Roots & Wings’ program is that they do not have a healthy or happy idea of family. Their childhood memories are tainted with abandonment and abuse. Most have a very distant relationship with their parents and siblings - if any at all.
 
The consequence of this type of upbringing is that the cycle continues from one generation to the next. It produces young women that are all alone. Mothers who have no concept of what family means. It leaves new parents with a poor model to follow and a skewed idea of family that is held as normal and expected.  

We long to show each mom, dad, daughter and son GOD'S PLAN for family. Not only do we aim to show them, our goal is to give each family the knowledge and tools they need to build a new concept of family for their children: one of respect, honor, protection and love.  

We believe with our whole heart that every child deserves a family like that. They deserve a family that loves them unconditionally; parents that will be there to support them on days when it feels like everything is falling apart. Family to turn to for advice, a helping hand or a hug, whether they're three years old or thirty.

In order to preserve and strengthen families, Roots & Wings puts significant emphasis on creating special spaces for families to bond. Family bonding is essential for families to connect and to cultivate love, respect and appreciation for one another. Our goal behind events or outings is not to give children experiences, but rather to give families opportunities to focus on spending quality time together and teach them how to create traditions and memories that will last a lifetime. 

Family is something truly special. This season of Thanksgiving, we want to take a moment to really give thanks for our families. We hope it will inspire you to join us in fighting for those families who are working every day to become the family God intended them to be.
