November 2015 Newsletter

From Pastor Tim

Dear Pine Valley Family,

November has come around again. They say that “time flies while you are having fun.” Well, we must be having a great time because it is flying at light speed. October sure flew by. First of all, on behalf of Pastor Barry, Pastor Trish, and myself, we say “thank you” for all of the gestures and expressions of your appreciation of us during Pastor Appreciation Month. It is a joy to serve Jesus Christ here at PVUMC.

Second, I want to invite everyone to take part in our Save a Life Sunday on November 8. Our North Carolina Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church has pledged 1 million dollars to the Imagine No Malaria Mosquito Net Campaign for Africa. We are going to take part on Nov. 8 by encouraging every person to bring 10 dollars. That 10 dollars will buy a mosquito net that will save at least one life if not a whole family. Just think you can personally save a family from dying of malaria. Our youth will lead us in this effort on that Sunday by helping us see what it means to put our faith in action and be the Body of Christ who is active in the world. Again, we hope that each person will bring 10 dollars. That means that for my family of four, we will give 40 dollars total that Sunday to buy four nets and save up to four people or possibly four families. Come and be a part of saving many lives.

Third, I want to thank everyone again for your faithfulness to the Raise the Roof effort. By now our fellowship hall roof is under construction and the house behind the church is in the works of being purchased. It is still not too late to pledge or give. Again, these gifts are over and above our regular tithing. We still need tithes to do the ministry of the church and make disciples for Jesus Christ. I know that we will all strive together to cheerfully give as God leads us.

Last but not least, we will start a new sermon series on November 1 called “Body Functions.” We are going to learn what it means to be the Body of Christ. As we learn about these aspects of what it means to be the Church, I pray we will see how we all are needed and called by God to live into that design. Think of someone you can invite to church as we explore this topic together.

Keep up the great work, PVUMC. We are just on the cusp of seeing God do great and marvelous things through us here for the advancement of the Kingdom of God.

Your proud pastor,

Dr. Tim Reaves, Lead Pastor
PVUMC

UMW Reading program is still going strong! Here is another write up about one of the many wonderful books:
What’s So Blessed About Being Poor?: Seeking the Gospel in the Slums of Kenya, by L. Susan Slavin and Coralis Salvador is a book written by an attorney and a lay missioner based on their experiences ministering to some of the poorest people in Africa. Even though the book is not especially well written the Christian concepts and principles that are discussed and displayed in this book make it worth taking the time to read. One of the thought provoking ideas was related in Chapter 3 is about people trying to use poverty as a tool, as an advantage. However the blessing is not to see poverty as a challenge to move forward but to give them determination and inspiration and hope to move forward. “Christ’s blessing carries with it the obligation to be poor and truthful.” The examples that Susan and Coralis use throughout the book to demonstrate the Christian principles that they are discussing are extremely poignant. Please read this book for an addition to your Education for Mission Category.

Stephen Ministry

The art of listening is the most effective communication tool a person can possess. During October, Stephen Ministers have studied more, learned more, and practiced more, the art of listening. It is a skill we all should sharpen from time to time. It doesn’t just come naturally because we want so much to be heard. Being an effective listener requires a desire, an intentional commitment, and patience. It is a discipline we must practice. Did you know that silence is also a form of good communication? Being aware of what a person does not say can speak volumes. Our relationship with God depends heavily on listening and those moments of silence with Him. Psalm 43:10 tells us to “Be Still and Know That I Am God." James 1:19 tells us to “let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak.”

If you are in need of a truly attentive, caring listener, you might consider asking for a Stephen Minister. Any one of our leaders would carefully pair you with a Stephen Minister Caregiver who would listen to you and assist you in a crisis situation. A crisis isn’t even necessary. It can even just be a difficult situation you are in the midst of. If interested, contact the church office or one of our Stephen Leaders.

Thanks to the efforts of many groups Trunk or Treat was a huge success!
Most of the 200+ children that here were not from PVUMC. We fed over 400 people. Thank you for your help spreading the word about Jesus Christ and our great church to the community. Congratulations to first place trunk Ambie Hower and Kelly Mull for the Mystery Machine/Scooby Doo theme. Second place trunk was Mary, Berry, and Clay Stephens for the camouflaged Duck Dynasty theme. Those were the kid's choice winners. Also congratulations to Travis Eason for being the closest on the "Guess the amount of candy corns" jar.

The UMW again thanks all who made their fall fundraiser both possible and such a great fundraiser for missions.
