October was a very busy month with RISE Colorado members getting actively involved with the "If Not Now..." Report. The report was a collaboration between the If Not Now Coalition made up of seventeen different organizations working in Aurora and around Colorado hoping to partner with the district to improve academic achievement for Aurora students. The If Not Now Coalition held a press conference and a candidate forum for the Aurora Public Schools Board of Education to mark the release of the report and spark meaningful conversations throughout the community around how we can all work together for better outcomes for Aurora Public School students. RISE members provided powerful testimonies at both events. Check out RISE member Herdine's testimony in this video:

Growing the RISE Family: Meet Emily Hoel!
Emily Hoel
RISE Operations Coordinator
"I RISE because I have been so fortunate in regards to my education.  I was able to attend a safe and thriving public school and my parents were always involved in my education.  I was successful in my education, not because my family was wealthy, but because my school system and parents were doing a good job.  I recognize how important these two things have been in my journey.  For this reason, I strongly relate to and support RISE’s mission to boost parent involvement in education both in schools and at home.  We all have incredible potential and deserve the opportunity to explore and cultivate that potential!"
What is your new role at RISE? What will you be doing on your role?
My role at RISE is the Operations Coordinator.  I will be an employee of “many hats” with my main goal being to keep RISE functioning smoothly and efficiently.  A few specific tasks of mine are maintaining the office, keeping administrative tasks up to date, and supporting the staff and members of RISE in any way possible.

What are you most excited for as you join the RISE family?
I am very excited to have found such a passionate and competent team in the RISE family.  Not only is the staff fantastic, but the parents, students, and community members of Aurora have already inspired me in so many ways! I look forward to spending more time getting to know all the current and future RISE members.

If you could have one superpower what would it be and why?
I would love to be able to fly.  I think it would be super fun and a huge time and energy saver.  It would be perfect for me because I LOVE to travel.  I could just fly on over to Australia or Asia at any moment.

Why do you believe parent involvement is important to student achievement?
A teacher’s time and influence on students is invaluable, but there is a limit to their impact.  Teacher’s resources are limited and their connection with students is different than the relationship with their parents. When educational goals are intertwined in the parent-child relationship, academic achievement is heightened.  This concept is no longer up for debate.  It has been proven that children perform better in school when parents are engaged in their education.
