November Arts Pop-Up Newsletter...

November has already proved a very social month for me with visitors to town, especially my 82 year old dad who did the 15 hour train trip from Brisbane to Sydney and back again one week later – and he loved it!  Opening in Melbourne this month is Vedat Acikalin's exhibition now visiting its 4th big Aussie city. There is plenty of exhibition colour happening in Sydney too - matching the colour of spring bursting out all over town.  Does anyone else think the jacarandas are the bluest ever?
Until next month, enjoy this one… Cassie

CURRENT EXHIBITIONS & ARTISTS I AM WORKING WITH...
Poster for the exhibition. Photograph of Turkish veteran, Adhil Sahin (L) and Australian veteran, Len Hall (R) meeting for the first time in 1990 - 75 years after fighting each other as enemies on the Gallipoli battlefields.

ON NOW IN MELBOURNE Until Monday 30 November...

Vedat Acikalin. Gallipoli Then & Now. Bonds Forged by War
10 – 30 November 2015

Now onto the 4th city of this national 5 city  tour – if you are in Melbourne or surrounds, then be sure to put this on your November ‘to visit’ list.  A most poignant, engaging and emotional collection of photographs taken over the last 30 years.  Featuring in the Melbourne show are 8 veterans from Victoria  and their families.  I was lucky to be in Melbourne for the Opening - what a night.

Elisabeth Cummings. New Paintings
17 November - 19 December 2015.  OPENING Tue 17 Nov 6-8pm

This is a most beautiful collection of new paintings by one of Australia's most influential living painters.  What an artist.  What a woman.   Imagine how many artists she has influenced in her creative lifetime?
The day after her Opening next week in Sydney, Elisabeth will fly to the USA to visit her sister.  When I phoned her one day last week she was wrangling grandchildren, organising her new passport and packing for a brief two day trip to Brisbane.  All in the lead up to her new exhibition.  She seems unstoppable!

A Coo-ee Christmas
21 November – 23 December 2015.  OPENING Sat 21 Nov from 3pm

The annual colourful and fun Coo-ee Christmas show is coming up.  What a great excuse to visit this gallery if you haven’t been for awhile – one of my Sydney favourites – and buy some artwork for yourself or a friend of course.  Adrian and his team have just returned from Paris after showing at the Paris Outsider Art Fair, held this year at Hotel du Duc in Paris.

Selection of works from Dead Man's Penny by Michael Keighery.

OPENING NEXT WEEK IN SYDNEY...
Michael Keaghery.  Dead Man’s Penny
26 November – 22 December 2015

An exhibition dedicated to the memory of Michael’s great uncle, Frank Keighery, who died at Gallipoli in 1915.  The families of British and Australian soldiers – Frank’s included – who died at Gallipoli all received a medallion from the British Government.  Ironically it became known as the Dead Man’s Penny and was inscribed with the words, ‘He died for Freedom and Honour’.  Many of the families did not share such a sentiment.

OPENING NEXT WEEK IN SYDNEY...
The Great Apron Show
26 November - 06 December 2015

An exhibition of unique, artist designed, custom made, hand-crafted aprons.  Tropical aprons, vintage fabrics, practical, cute, fun, kitsch, colourful, embroidered and hand-stitched - this fabulous exhibition is curated by Carol Ruff (aka Coral Reef), artist and ukulele player and teacher - can you guess which apron Carol designed above?  I love aprons and have a little collection of my own so can't wait for this show.
A celebration of the humble apron.

WATCHING THIS MONTH...Films for Flickerfest 2016
FOR THE DIARY...
Flickerfest International Short Film Festival 25th Anniversary
08 – 17 January 2016

I have been on the selection committee now for many years - each year getting a bunch of films to watch as the first culling process, passing on the good ones to the Director Bronwyn Kidd and her crew to watch and decide on for the Festival. Some are shockers, some are incredible - I had some good German and French films in my bunch this year. Wonder if any will make it?  See you at Bondi...

EATING THIS MONTH...
FAVOURITE CITY BAR OF THE MONTH...
Apart from eating at home lots this month with family visits and events, I really loved a night out in the back laneways of Sydney and enjoyed a night at Ash St Cellars wine bar, in the little laneway tucked off George Street, behind Angel Place. Staff friendly, food good, atmosphere great, experience very pleasant indeed.
