  • Family Conferences
  • Calendar Update (Specifics)

Greetings,

Even as the calendar year begins to come to a close, new doors are opening daily at Inspired Teaching School! We are a staff dedicated to making the most of every opportunity, and we are working hard to ensure that we do just that in these final months of 2015.

Be it envisioning new ventures, following through on existing plans, or finding time for reflection and inquiry, the life of an educator is a busy one! We are excited to have so much happening in our world, and we are thrilled to be able to share it all with you.

In this issue, you will find information regarding some of our long-term projects and ambitions, as well as a listing of our events through the end of the calendar year. Some of these events happen more than once, and we have provided a bit of extra detail for the benefit of new families as well as for those who are seeking more clarity surrounding certain events unique to our school, such as Intersessions and Learning Showcases.

Thank you for reading! As always, I welcome your feedback and suggestions as we continue to collaborate for the benefit of our children, our school, and our community.

Cheers,
Deborah

News and Announcements:

SAVE THE DATE: Inspired Evening - 5/14/16
Please save the date for this wonderful fundraiser, hosted at the Edgewood Arts Building. We will be celebrating our school's 5th year serving the community.  More details to come!

Report Cards:
It is that time of year again! Watch for your child's first report card for SY 2015-16 to arrive in early December. One thing to note: if you are carrying a balance greater than $100 on your school lunch account, your child's report card will be held until the balance is settled.

Family Conferences:
We have had an excellent turnout for our family conferences thus far, but we are not yet at our goal of 100% participation. Inspired Teaching School strives to engage and involve families as much as possible. Our partnerships with families are key to the success of our students. We greatly appreciate the opportunity to share with you, and ask that you reach out to your child's teacher and plan an appointment if you have not done so already.

Calendar Updates (Specifics):
Community Meeting:
This meeting will be held in the school's multi-purpose room beginning at 7pm. The Department of Parks and Recreation will be discussing the future of the sports fields and recreation Center. We hope our community will be well-represented and that our voices will be heard.

Learning Showcase #1:
The Learning Showcase is a school wide celebration of student learning. There are three showcases every year. Families are expected to attend and visit as many classes as possible.

November Open House:
Recruitment season is upon us! Our first open house has been scheduled for Saturday, November 21. Each year we hear from new families how much their interaction with current ITS families shapes their experience in very positive ways. We are going to be sending home a postcard with each student, and we ask that each family share this with another family. Please help us spread the word!

Changemaker Days:
Our students are encouraged to brainstorm and identify an issue in need of change, and then go through a collaborative process of problem-solving and re-envisioning to address it. Classrooms select a project that is meaningful to them and then work through this experience as a community, helping to build in each student character, empathy, and the skills of a changemaker.

Thanksgiving Holiday:
The holiday begins at COB Tues (11/24), and as such there will be no aftercare on Tuesday. The School will be closed on Wed (11/25), Thurs (11/26), and Fri (11/27).

ITS Winter Concert:
Preparations are underway to put on a wonderful evening for all of our families and community on Thurs (12/10). This will be our first concert of the year, as well as our first under the leadership of our new Musical Teacher, Ms. Liza Tredway. More details will be announced closer to the date. We are proud to invite everyone to come and enjoy, and we hope to see you there!

EdFest 2015:
My School DC will host this year's event at the DC Armory (2001 E. Capitol St NE). It is billed as DC's only city-wide public school fair. Click here for more information.

Intersession #1:
This is a week during which students study one topic in-depth–from a list of topics often not found in the school curriculum–but which help them develop necessary habits of mind essential to becoming critical thinking, innovative, self-directed, and active learners. Students work in mixed age groupings, have different teachers (sometimes even parents), and spend several hours each morning engaging in deep inquiry and hands-on exploration of special topics. Examples of past topics include cooking, knitting, videography, painting and dance.

Winter Break:
Following the half-day of school on Dec. 18th, Inspired Teaching School will be closed from Dec. 21 - Jan 1, 2016. We will welcome students back to school on Monday, Jan 4, 2016.
