Isaac Adewole Emerges Minister of Health 

Professor Isaac Folorunso Adewole, outgoing Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, has been sworn in today (Wednesday) as Nigeria’s health minister. Prof. Adewole is the 11th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan since it attained the status of an Independent University Institution in 1962, having hitherto been a College of the University of London from 1948 – 1962.

Tribunal reviews stiffer punishment for erring Medical Doctors

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), has disclosed that a law which would prescribe stiffer sanctions and penalties for doctors found guilty of gross misconduct, is currently undergoing review.  Speaking to journalists yesterday on the council’s activities, the registrar, Dr Abdulmunin Ibrahim, said the act setting up the council was obsolete and weak as it cannot mete out strong punishment for doctors found wanting in the discharge of their duties.

FG to use ICT for integrated e-health

The Federal Government has said that it is working hard to achieve the Universal Health Care (UHC) in Nigeria by 2020, using ICT to save one Million Lives (SOMLs) in Nigeria.  The Permanent Secretary Ministry of Communications Technology, Dr. Tunji  Olaopa, made the assertion at the preparatory technical meeting to Africa eHealth Summit 2016, held at the Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja.

FG okays $400m investment for Medical City Hospital

The Federal Government has endorsed the construction of an ultra-modern 300 bed hospital worth $400 million in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The joint venture project pioneered by a local health investor, Universal Medical Innovation (UMI), and its German partners will be sited at Giri district of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

30 doctors quit Katsina service due to poor salary – NMA

Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Katsina State branch has raised alarm that 30 doctors left the services of the state government within the last six month due to poor pay.  The state chairman of the association, Dr. Kabir Suleiman, raised the alarm yesterday while addressing newsmen on the deplorable condition of health facilities in the state.

Practice Licence now a Prerequisite for Medical Graduates’ Participation in NYSC Scheme

In an effort to stem quackery and untoward practices in the medical profession, the Federal Government  on monday, barred all graduates of medicine from participating in the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme until they qualify as medical doctors and secure practice licence from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).

Meningitis A elimination: WHO scores Nigeria, 15 others high

The World Health Organisation, WHO, yesterday, scored Nigeria alongside 15 other African countries high in the fight against the epidemics of meningococcal A meningitis.  Meningitis is a bacterial infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord which has swept across 26 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa killing and disabling young people annually or cause severe brain damage within hours.

UCH Procures N10m Radiation Machine for Cancer Treatment

Prof. Temitope Alonge, Chief Medical Director, University College Hospital(UCH), Ibadan, has said that the hospital has purchased a N10 million radiation machine for the treatment of cancer. Alonge told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the Cobalt 60 radiation machine would be delivered to the hospital before the end of November.

Katsina NMA to shut hospitals over poor welfare, working condition

Before the SDGs, how did Nigeria really do with the MDGs?

In August 2015, reports emerged in the Nigerian press that “Nigeria had attained the Millennium Development Goals”.  The article below quoted the Secretary of Programmes in the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on MDGs, Mr. Ogenyi Ochapa, verbatim, with no critical commentary on the validity of his statement, which boldly declared: Nigeria has Attained HIV, Maternal Mortality MDGs ahead of Deadline!
