noise, pain and what is pretty all about?

Dear <<First Name>>,

reaching out

It's been a long hard summer and I'm happy to have my fingers back tapping at the keys. Seems so normal! And yet how do we do normal when tragedy is everywhere? I won't give you the list of worldwide horrific events that are front page (and sometimes aren't front page but should be), as you already know. In addition we each have our own personal tragedies to weather. For me, and hopefully for you too, the way that we weather these storms is by reaching out, letting hands touch hands, and showing the bad guys that terror doesn't change our humanity. We can still love, we can still hope, we can still live despite their best efforts. Hatred is their thing....it does not have to be ours. And when they spread their hatred in the name of their religion, it is not their religion that is at fault. It is their hatred. When we love, they lose. With this in mind, reach out to someone who is not like you and  say hello. Someone who looks different, or believes in a different god, or wears a different style from yours.
Jean Jullien created this beautiful symbol the day of the Paris tragedies....it was his personal response to an attack on his home. I share it, along with his story, not because you haven't seen it before. But because you have....everywhere. Proof that reaching out in kindness has great power.

There are people who think that death needs to be re-designed. Maybe they're right, but those aren't the questions that concern me right now. I want to know how to best us the time I have left.  read more
tires, runways and cutting edge food
...Then I went to design school and began working in restaurants to pay the bills...the beginning of both my aesthetic and culinary education. I soon left he South Bay in search of better aesthetics and better food. Now I only return under duress, or when someone in my husband's family has a birthday. read more
(more) cutting edges

...Maybe we can do something to impact the global changes, maybe not. Regardless, do we need to continue with the carelessness we've shown over the past many decades? There are plenty who think not, and as this movement grows I hope that treading on our planet with care will become the norm. It's odd and disconcerting that taking care has become a bit cutting edge!

*In architectural criticism the parti is the assumption made that informs a design as well as the choice of approach when realizing the scheme.  The big idea.
