FSC Fight Song
We stand up and cheer for the heroes we hold dear,
The Moccasins of F.S.C.
Our teams stands the test to rise above the rest
and always brings us victory.
We know how to fight for the colors red and white.
Our Southern pride is tried and true.
Go for the win!
Never give in!
F S C we cheer for you.
Go Mocs!

LECTURE TO EXAMINE IMPACT OF SUPREME COURT’S KELO DECISION- On the 10th anniversary of one of the most controversial recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions, the Center for Free Enterprise at Florida Southern College will host a lecture to examine the impact of the Kelo v. City of New London case. Professor Ilya Somin of George Mason University School of Law will give the lecture, “The Grasping Hand: Kelo v. City of New London and the Limits of Eminent Domain,” at 6 p.m. on Nov. 19 in the Hollis Room on the FSC campus. The lecture, part of the Politics, Law and Economics Series sponsored by the Center for Free Enterprise, is free and open to the public. A book signing will follow the lecture. The 2005 Kelo decision ruled that the city of New London, Conn., could condemn 15 residential properties and transfer them to a private owner in order to make way for a new private development. Critics of the decision said it marked an unwarranted expansion of the Fifth Amendment, which previously allowed the taking of private property only for public use.

Study Suggestions:
Connect with professors. Professors are one resource students simply do not use nearly enough! Encourage your student to schedule appointments with professors or go to posted office hours. If your student doesn’t understand a concept or must miss a class, encourage communication with the professor. At FSC, faculty and staff want to help students reach their full potential.

First Year Advice:
The holiday season is quickly approaching, the Halloween candy has been eaten and the cheerful holiday décor is already on display. For many, this festive spirit is contagious, and distracting. With the anticipation of Thanksgiving and Winter break looming, it can be challenging for a student to remember the importance of finishing the semester as strong as he or she started. Many students will have projects, papers, or exams that are not due until the last weeks of class but that are weighted heavily in their overall grade. Waiting until the last minute to complete these major assignments will most certainly put your student at risk for not doing as well in a course due to the fact that there will be little to no opportunity to improve the final grade at that point in the semester. Remind your student that staying focused and motivated during this time will prevent the last minute stress and scrambling seen at the end of the semester. For first-year students, the end of the semester also signals a time when a student will officially earn a Florida Southern GPA. Remind your student that it is much more relaxing to spend the month of December being proud of the GPA you earned rather than worrying about how much you will need to improve it during the spring semester, so make sure they stay focused and finish strong!
– JoEllen Tharp, Student Solutions Specialist

Second-Year Insight:
Class registration for spring semester has begun and second-year students who have earned 30 or more credit hours may begin selecting classes on Monday, Nov. 16 at 8 p.m.  As an additional note, students should check their Portal site to make sure there are no registration holds. If your student is having any challenges, please encourage them to come to us for assistance.
– Louise Johnson, Student Solutions Specialist

From the Counseling Center:
Mission:  Possible.  The semester is well into its second half and most students still have quite a few papers to write and projects to complete.  There are also more tests to take and, of course, final exams.  The majority of students will manage to get it all done but this is typically a stressful period as they begin to feel the pressures of limited time and conflicting demands.  And, for some students, the usual stressors are magnified by the effects of earlier procrastination or ineffective time management.  It’s a short sprint from here to the end of the term and, to be successful, students must put every day to good use.  You can support your students’ final press by:

  • Encouraging good use of campus academic resources such as Tutor Tables, the Writing Center, professors and academic advisors, and the Student Solutions Center.
  • Reminding them that the Chaplain, Community Living staff (RAs, Hall Directors, and CLCs) and the Counseling Center are all excellent sources of assistance with good stress management.
  • Sending a care package, a funny card, or other cheering message expressing your confidence in their ability to succeed.
  • Helping them leave some study time in the coming Thanksgiving holiday.  Students often have such a long list of things they want to do while at home that they don’t get around to the studies they meant to do.
  • Reminding them to use the skills and strategies that have gotten them through previous stressful times.
Even though the student life can be a stressful one, most will manage to complete everything in good style.  Your encouragement is an important part of that success.
From the FSC Career Center:
Graduate School!  Is your student considering graduate school? NOW is the time to start preparing! Have them attend the “Jumpstart Your Future: Graduate School Series” hosted by the Career Center.  This two-part series will provide strategies on how to choose the right graduate school program, and will instruct you on how to research and navigate the graduate school application process.  Additionally, this series will cover how to write dynamic personal statements, CV’s/resumes, and will provide guidance on how to obtain recommendation letters.
Session #2—Wednesday, November 18th from 5:00-6:00 in the Career Center

Personal Statements/CV’s/Resumes/Recommendation Letters

Is your student graduating this year? Has he/she established a plan of action for the “next step”? Your student will have the opportunity to meet with a Career Counselor to gain insight about resources and strategies to guide him/her in achieving professional goals! Students can choose from the topic areas listed below to create an experience tailored to their specific needs.

  • Resume/Cover Letter
  • Graduate School
