Up and down the Central Corridor, the Green Line is connecting the rich cultural hubs that bring life and vibrancy to area communities. On Friday, November 13, it will all be on display for you to explore and discover. Join Twin Cities LISC and the Central Corridor as Cultural Corridor (C4) partners for a day of exposure and learning through experience, including tours, food, performances and arts & cultural activities. Peer into the history, present and future, of the Twin Cities through the streets of cultural business districts along the Green Line. The Creative Enterprise Zone will be just one of the tour destinations.

The Creative Enterprise Zone was born out of recognition of an invaluable St. Paul asset: the historical center of creativity and enterprise surrounding the Raymond Station area. Too many similar neighborhoods around the country have lost their unique local identity, creative assets, and/or mixed-use environment through lack of planning and community organization.

The Creative Enterprise Zone first organized as a response to the potential displacement of artists and creative businesses and nonprofits resulting from increased investment and development spurred by the coming Green Line around the Raymond-University area.

Today, we’re seeing exciting creative-oriented developments coming to the neighborhood. Rather than pushing out creative enterprises, they are helping to foster the conditions in which they thrive. From St. Paul’s Smallest Museum housed in a firebox outside the thriving new WORKHORSE Coffee Bar, to Vandalia Tower and former American Can building where the Artistic Mini Golf organization, Can Can Wonderland, will soon open, creativity and enterprise are thriving in the Zone.

With your support, the Creative Enterprise Zone Action Committee will continue to focus on advancing the conditions that support the economic success of the people who work, create and live here. We will continue to work to attract investment and build the Creative Enterprise Zone as a destination for creative work.

We're extending our deadline and making it even easier to apply for the Creative Enterprise Zone: We Make It Here project!

Creative Enterprise Zone: We Make It Here is a project designed to celebrate and promote economic development in the Creative Enterprise Zone (CEZ) through promotions, pop up mixers, and public art.

We need artists* to create "on the street" artworks which will help draw awareness to businesses in the area.

*Artists include: photographers, illustrators, painters, sculptors, graphic designers, videographers, projectionists, filmmakers, architects, landscape architects, performance artists, printmakers, chalk artists, textile artists...

Stipends are available, in the amount of $500. There is also the opportunity to work with more than one featured business (which means a larger stipend!). Check out our Creative Enterprise Rolodex for a sample of possible businesses within the CEZ:

It's easy to apply - just tell us what you would do! As an example, in the photo to the right is a sign prototype that has been made to promote the CEZ.

CEZ Artists Open Studio Doors for DO the DOW, 2015

Once a year only, the private doors of the Dow Building Artist Studios, swing open, inviting the public to tour the private studios of the dozens of artists who work there. This year’s theme is “Creativity Meets Passion.” This year, 28 artists will welcome you into their space to share their passion for creativity.

In addition to artist studio tours, there will be music and spoken word performances in the beautiful new Dow Gallery, on the ground level Friday, November 13.

2nd Annual Yunomi Invitational Returns to Raymond Gallery

They’re small enough to fit in a stocking and large enough to hold a glass of wine. The 2nd Annual Yunomi Invitational is back at the Raymond Gallery, 761 Raymond Ave., just in time for the holidays! These small traditional teacups without handles make a perfect holiday gift and great addition to any pottery collection. With yunomis from more than 35 artists on display and for sale at Raymond Gallery now through December 19, ‘tis the season to appreciate handmade pottery!

The exhibition presents an opportunity to examine the myriad directions that the work of the now infamous “Minge-sota” group of potters has taken in creating the yunomi. Potter Warren MacKenzie, who was strongly influenced by Japanese Potters like Soetsu Yanagi and Shoji Hamada, brought Japanese techniques and ideas home to Minnesota. These Japanese traditions were then passed on to his students and emulators, giving rise to the “Minge-sota” movement, which refers to a Japanese folk art movement.

Stop-in anytime during gallery hours (M-F 10am-4pm and Sat Noon-4pm), to check out these fun and beautiful works.

Manav Gupta to speak at Forecast Public Art

Join Forecast Public Art for a special event with artist Manav Gupta. Manav will speak to his career as an international artist and his work "Excavations in Hymns of Clay." Manav deploys the quintessentially Indian potter’s produce of clay objects such as the earthen lamps and earthen cups and transforms their individual identity into metaphors and idioms of sustainability, context, perception and treatment as he conceptualizes and creates large scale avant-garde installations. This event is free, but RSVP is required due to limited space. RSVP here.

See the high-fashion aesthetic and functional design of Judy Hornbacker this Friday at her showing of fall/winter coats and jackets, capulets and other designs at a Pre-Holiday Evening with Judy at her Studio in Collective Spaces, 2500 University Ave.

Collective Spaces is in the Midway Commercial building – “Triangle Building” on University Ave W in Saint Paul just off 280. There will be an attendant at the elevator to escort you to Judy’s studio - This entrance is on the Franklin Ave side of the building.

Urban Boatbuilders to Host Boat & Tool Sale

Over the years, Urban Boatbuilders has amassed a collection of extra tools that they’ll be selling as a way to benefit both the organization and their supporters. All proceeds from the sale will go straight back into Urban Boatbuilders, helping make sure they can continue their mission of youth development. Stop by to fill out your tool bench. Brats and beer will be available from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

What is the Creative Enterprise Zone?

The Creative Enterprise Zone, located mid-city between St. Paul and Minneapolis, has the goal to be recognized as a center of creativity and enterprise, a place where many people make a living by their creative capacities.

Showcasing a mixture of urban-industrial and innovative enterprises, the Creative Enterprise Zone promises to be a fertile laboratory of entrepreneurship, business incubation, artistic endeavor and eclectic urban design. Located along the Central Corridor Light Rail Transit line at the hub of the Raymond Station area, this dynamic nucleus of artisans and industry provides a unique sense of place that captures the imagination.

Regionally significant due to the central location and ease of access, the community offers a symbiotic mix of live and work opportunities. Cultivation of diverse, affordable spaces for entrepreneurial businesses, artisans and residents, and support systems for a tightly interconnected creative community, are high priorities.
