Alumni Spotlight

Emergency physician and UA Emergency Medicine Residency Program alumnus Casey Solum, MD, Class of 2014, relates harrowing and heartfelt experiences from the ER in the Nov. 5 issue of the Downtown Devil. Dr. Solum presented at the UA College of Medicine – Phoenix Mini-Medical School 3.0 to talk about his experiences and lessons learned from working in the emergency medical field.

Where in the World is Ken?

“I am returning to the Caribbean for all of November, not for a holiday, but to work and teach at the Emergency Medicine residency in Guyana. This time, we will be graduating five physicians from our three-year Vanderbilt University-run program. These graduates go through an intense written and oral exam based on their study of material in the ABEM curriculum. This includes half-day weekly conferences, simulation labs, and additional ultrasound training using a donated machine from Vanderbilt's Emergency Department.

I’ve also arranged for RAD-AID International to provide additional radiology and ultrasound training. That is actually incidental to why I asked them to come. They will be surveying the hospital’s needs for additional radiology equipment and systems, with the idea that they can usually supply some from the U.S. and other sources.

Also, I have just returned the final proofs for the new 2nd edition of “Improvised Medicine: Providing Care in Extreme Environments” (NY:McGraw-Hill). It should appear in early 2016 and (start your guffawing now) a photo of me is on the front cover.

I’ll be back in early December and then leave mid-January for seven months in Antarctica to be the lead physician for the U.S. Antarctic Program at McMurdo Station. I’ll be there through next September during the Antarctic winter. That means no sun except for, perhaps, the first couple of weeks. It’s my second tour there. The first was for the summer season (no night) in 2009-2010. (We do have Internet.)”

Best wishes from abroad,
Ken
